Historic Trabue-Russell House restoration nears bidding phase By Mig Feuser / The Adair Progress The Columbia City Council devoted a significant portion of its regular meeting on Monday evening, May 4, 2026, to the future of the Trabue-Russell House, with discussion centering on costs, priorities and the need for sustained investment in the historic property. Members of the House Committee, led by Mary Ann Loy, provided an updated look at the restoration project, noting that earlier estimates--once placing the total cost well above $300,000--may not reflect actual expenses in the local market. Loy clarified that some figures discussed at a previous meeting had caused confusion, including the cost of bringing electrical service underground. While a full project estimate was cited at $5,000, the actual material cost could be closer to $1,000 due to in-house labor availability. The committee emphasized that the project is not new construction but restoration, meaning unknown issues could emerge once work begins. At the same time, early repairs suggest costs may trend lower than originally projected by the architect, whose estimates were based on central Kentucky pricing. Behind the Calls: Adair dispatchers handle pressure few see The Adair County E-911 Center has proved time and again their qualities in helping people. Mig Feuser talked for The Adair Progress with the center's director, Derrick Murphy, about the state of the center and the development. The Adair Progress: "Adair County 911 dispatchers are often the first point of contact in emergencies. What kind of training and ongoing professional development do your staff members receive to prepare them for such high-pressure situations?" Derrick Murphy: "Adair County E-911 Center employees have to attend a four week training in Richmond at Kentucky's DOCJT [Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training] at Eastern Kentucky University to become a certified dispatcher. After they attend this training they become certified dispatchers and have to complete 8 hours of re-certification training yearly." Letter: Successful Free Tipping By Larry Russell Bryant Adair County Judge Executive Adair County showed up in a BIG way this past weekend! I want to personally thank everyone who participated in our Free Tipping Event. Together, we collected an incredible 100.72 tons of garbage in our continued effort to keep Adair County clean and beautiful. I appreciate every volunteer, county employee, partner organization, Class D laborers, and resident who took the time to help make this event such a success. Community involvement like this truly makes a difference, and I am proud of what we can accomplish when we work together. I am also excited to announce that Adair County officially received grant funding yesterday for our upcoming ESCRAP Electronic Waste and HHW Household Hazardous Waste collection events coming this fall.
