Get ready for the 2026 Great Backyard Bird Count From Wendy Butler Burt Starting next Friday and lasting through Monday (February 13-16, 2026), people from around the world will take time out of their days to watch and count all the birds they see or hear and report their findings as part of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC www.birdcount.org). These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations by providing hyper-local data. Kentucky is a terrific place to watch birds and Adair County is home to over 100 bird species at this time of year and many more species during the other seasons. And while many of us admire and feed wild birds, few Adair Countians actively count and report their sightings so they can be included in state and national databases. We can do better! The GBBC is citizen science, an excellent example of a project where each of us can help scientists better understand how many of each species is present in exact locations before they migrate. Participating in the GBBC is important because birds need our help. A recently published study determined that almost 1 out of every 4 North American birds have disappeared from our skies over the past 50 years thats 3 BILLION fewer birds than we had in 1970. So, will you help science? Will you participate next weekend in the GBBC? Its easy.
