High volume of calls for service handled in two days The Columbia Police Department responded to more than 70 calls for service during the winter storm this past weekend, January 24th and 25th, according to the Adair County 911 Dispatch Center. I am proud of our Police Department for their dedication and professionalism in serving the citizens of Columbia during challenging conditions. Leonard Ford, 89, Taylor County, KY Leonard "Starchy" Ford of Campbellsville, son of the late Leonard Coakley Ford and Flora Alice Lewis Ford, was born May 16, 1936 in Taylor County, Kentucky. He died Saturday, January 24, 2026 in Campbellsville at age 89. He had made a profession of faith in Christ and attended The Rock Church. Leonard was better known by his nick-name "Starchy" given to him by friends at an early age. The name carried with him with his work. Starchy began working in the petroleum business for many years for Ashland Oil. Winter storm gives Lindsey students new experiences By Duane Bonifer Lindsey Wilson University student Maria Eduarda '28 had never experienced snow until last weekend. And her first experience exceeded expectations. Eduarda, who is a biology major from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, was among several hundred Lindsey Wilson students who enjoyed a winter wonderland and unplanned day off as more than three inches of snow were spread over the university's A.P. White Campus over the weekend. The storm, which finished off with a layer of ice before ushering in frigid temperatures, closed the campus and canceled classes on Monday, January 26, 2026. The campus remained closed on Tuesday, January 27, but classes were held virtually. "It was my dream," said Eduarda, who sent pictures of the campus to her family members in Brazil, where it is the middle of summer in the Southern Hemisphere. "It was more pretty than I thought it would be. The trees, with ice, were so pretty." Carol Perkins: The Ski Trip (Part 5 of 5) Previous Column: The Ski Trip (Part 4 of 5) By Carol Perkins I left off with my skis in place and headed to the bottom of the slope. Guy and the bus driver watched as I faded into the night. The closer I raced down the slope, the more I feared I would kill someone else instead of myself. "GET OUT OF THE WAY!" I screamed. It took a second or two, but when the other skiers saw me, they scattered. I hit a massive mound of snow (stacked to stop runaway skiers) face-first and was glad to do it. Before too long, Guy was down the mountain and ready to ride the lift back up to the lodge with me. He didn't want to tell me that the lift did not stop to let skiers off. He had had a previous encounter where he took off his skis, placed them across his chest, and almost choked himself when he realized he had to jump off. "Get ready, now, because you are going to have to jump off," he said as we rose closer to the top. Start of LWU Irish Film Series delayed a week From Duane Bonifer Because of the winter storm, Lindsey Wilson Arts and Humanities Irish Film Series that was planned to start on Janaury 27, 2026, has been delayed a week. The public is still invited to screen four Irish films, now scheduled from February 3-24, 2026. Area residents will have an opportunity to learn about the last century of Irish culture and anti-colonial struggle through the lens of four films, thanks to the Lindsey Wilson University School of Arts and Humanities. The four films deal with Ireland's struggle for independence from four different perspectives. The screenings will now be:
