Kentuckians urged to continue avoiding unnecessary travel

From Naitore Djigbenou/Allen Blair

Frankfort, KY - Team Kentucky state highway crews continue to treat and plow snow and ice-covered roads across the Commonwealth as conditions intensified overnight and today bringing heavier snow showers and freezing rain. While plow trucks will remain active to keep routes passable, ice and extreme cold temperatures create additional threats to public safety like refreezing and slick roads, downed trees and power lines, and dangerous conditions for stranded drivers. Kentuckians are encouraged to continue avoiding unnecessary travel for their safety and to give crews and first responders room to work.

"While snow and freezing rain are expected to taper off tonight, the most dangerous impacts of this storm -- ice and extreme cold -- will linger throughout the week and continue to pose serious risks for drivers," said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray. "Our crews are working to address as many roads as possible, with a focus on keeping critical emergency routes passable. Persistent cold means progress will take time as we dig out. We're committed to doing our part, and we thank Kentuckians for doing theirs by staying off the roads when they can and expecting the unexpected if travel is required."

Gov. provides update on response to winter storm system

Governor encourages Kentuckians to stay home as crews work to clear snow and ice from roadways; power outages climb to over 50,000, with more expected

From Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - On Sunday, January 25, 2026, Gov. Andy Beshear was joined by Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Secretary Jim Gray and Kentucky Emergency Management Director Eric Gibson to provide an update on severe winter weather affecting the commonwealth. As snow, sleet and ice continue to move across Kentucky, Gov. Beshear encouraged Kentuckians to stay off the roads and to seek help in the event of a power outage.

"Kentucky is in the heart of the storm right now as precipitation moves across the state, and ice has become our biggest concern," said Gov. Beshear. "We expect snow, sleet and ice to keep falling throughout today and overnight. This is combined with dangerously cold temperatures throughout next week. Stay off the roads and stay warm. Power outages are rising quickly, and we need you to get to a warming center if your power is out."

Power Outages and Warming Centers: The Governor stated that power outages are rising fast, with over 50,000 reported at the time of the 10amET update. Gov. Beshear said that number is expected to rise throughout the day, making warming centers even more critical. Kentucky currently has 113 warming centers set up across the commonwealth for those facing an outage. To find a warming center near you, or if you need additional assistance, find resources here: www.kyem.ky.gov. (Locally: Adair County Warming Stations are open)

Kentucky State Parks have designated resort and recreational parks as warming stations. To assist Kentuckians in locating available warming stations, the Department of Parks has created a webpage with real-time updates at parks.ky.gov/inclement-weather.

Basketball: Indians defeat Eagles at Home

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Friday, January 23, 2026, the Adair County Indians defeated the Campbellsville Eagles 75-72 at home. The Indians repeatedly opened up double digit leads over Campbellsville, but the Eagles refused to go away and kept it close before mounting a comeback at the end.

The Indians were thankfully able to hold on late and pickup their 15th win of the season, and their fourth District win. Senior Tylin George led the scoring for Adair County with 26, followed by Dawson Gilbert with 16, John Shehan with 12, and Samuel Feese with 11. Landon Blakey led the team in rebounds, with 12, followed by Shehan with eight, and George with six. The team shot the ball 48% from the floor, 43% from three point range, and just 46% from the free throw line.

The team's return to the court is uncertain due to weather. Saturday's game was canceled. The Indians are next scheduled to travel to face Madisonville-North Hopkins (3-16) on Tuesday, but as of now that seems unlikely.
