Watch for Don Overstreet in Dead Man's Wire

Don Overstreet has a small role, as Doug O'Brien, in Gus Van Sant's new film Dead Man's Wire, opening in theaters worldwide this Friday, January 16, 2026.

Overstreet, the son of Joyce M. Coomer and Donald M. Overstreet of Columbia, served in the Air Force, stationed in the U.S., Germany, Kuwait, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq. Since 2017, he has been adding steadily to his acting credits. Among the many acting projects on his IMDB listing are credits in The Flight Before Christmas, New Fear’s Eve and Ed and Rooster’s Great Adventure, and Halsey's Beautiful Stranger (2019) music video, plus stunt credits in Baby Driver and Spider-Man: Homecoming, and stunt and acting credits in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017).

Dead Man's Wire was filmed in and around Louisville in January 2025, and is based on a true story. The movie is set in February 1977, when Tony Kiritsis entered the office of Richard Hall, president of the Meridian Mortgage Company, and took him hostage with a sawed-off shotgun wired with a "dead man's wire" from the trigger to Tony's own neck.

Kentucky Color: We can do better

By Billy Joe Fudge

We have all suffered through a decline of our health and quality of life since the advent of the USDA's food pyramid in '92. Even the 2011 improved, updated nutrition guide, called MyPlate, has not seemed to have captured public attention or restrained our hunger for or our dependence upon unhealthy foods. Combined with the continuing degradation of our physical and mental health caused by sedentary lifestyles, our quality of life has been in a literal, premature death spiral!

I am happy that the effort to define healthy eating continues and that the federal government continues to bring attention to the importance of eating healthy.

Now, every level of government should take steps to incentivize physical activity! Every school in the nation should prioritize physical activity and physical education in their curriculum! Every parent should realize that by allowing their children to imprison themselves in the home, on the sofa and behind a screen, may very well be setting them up for an unhealthy, torturous and shortened life!

We can and must do better!

Genealogy & History Research Center 2025 in Review

By Mike Watson

Calendar year 2025 was a busy, successful year at the Adair Co. Genealogy & History Research Center. More researchers visited and utilized our facility, more donations of genealogical research materials, historic documents, and artifacts came through our doors, more programs and events took place here and in the community.

April brought another employee to the front desk--Serena Corbin joined our merry band of historians as our technological expert and artist-in-residence. We also lost our veteran genealogist and cataloger, Ernestine "Ernie" Smith Bennett to retirement--but she will still be here a few days each month, and will be our on-call adviser on a regular basis.

The continuing partnerships with the Adair County Genealogical Society and the Jane Lampton Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution are valuable in strengthening our historic and genealogical ties with hundreds of individuals and organizations scattered across the continent.

Our programming increased in 2025. We were responsible for and partnered with the above groups as well as others, including the City of Columbia and the County of Adair, to participate in forty-three (43) events. We hope to have at least fifty-five (55) in the coming year.

Basketball: Indians defeat Falcons 69-65

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the Adair County Indians defeated the Monroe County Falcons 69-65 on the road. The Falcons tightened the game, and even momentarily took the lead in the fourth quarter before the Indians were able to squeeze ahead in the end.

Senior Tylin George led the scoring for Adair County with 25, followed by Dawson Gilbert with 16, and Landon Blakey with eight. George and Gilbert also led the team in rebounds, with seven each. The Indians shot 47% from the floor and a bleak 25% from three point range.

On the wrap up article after the most recent win over Taylor County, I was rather positive about the Tribe being able to pull out a win when they shot the ball poorly, and this game was much the same. However, this now makes back to back struggles in offensive performances for Adair County, something they will not be able to repeat in their matchup against Bell County on Friday in the first round of the H&W Dukes Kentucky 2A Championship.

That game is scheduled to get underway at 5pmCT on January 16, 2026, at the Owensboro Sportscenter, 1215 Hickman Ave, Owensboro, KY. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at OwensboroTickets.com or at the door. Admission is $14, and children 5 and under are admitted free.
