Free Colorectal Cancer Screening now available for military in KY

Active-duty service members and eligible family members in Kentucky now have access to blood test for colorectal cancer screening with no copay

From Hattie Martin

Guardant Health, Inc. announced on January 8, 2026, that its Shield blood test for colorectal cancer screening (CRC) is now covered for active-duty service members and their families, including in Kentucky, through TRICARE, the U.S. military's health insurance coverage, with no copay for average-risk individuals ages 45 and older.

Shield is the first and only blood test approved by the FDA as a primary screening option for CRC, offering U.S. military troops in Kentucky a more pleasant and convenient option for screening by overcoming barriers associated with other screening methods.

Ethan Coomer visits City Hall

From Trey Stephens
City of Columbia | Assistant to the Mayor

On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the City was delighted to host a visiting scholar from the University of Kentucky History Department, Ethan Coomer. Coomer is a Columbia native and has been at UK since 2023 studying History. During his time at UK he has studied the US Civil War, with specific research on African American soldiers in the Civil War and Kentuckians in the war. He has also done research and work on Greek History, and has traveled for historical studies in various other countries, including France, Germany, Czechia, Italy, and Austria.

This marked the second visit of scholars to Columbia this week, as the City hosted two visiting scholars from the McConnell Center for Leadership at the University of Louisville on Monday. The two visits this week and many others throughout the year are examples of Columbia being a hub of academia in southern Kentucky with hometown Lindsey Wilson University and other universities such as Tennessee Tech, University of Kentucky, and the University of Louisville conducting research and activities in our community.

Basketball: Indians face Hawks in 2A action

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team is back in action tonight as they travel to Lebanon to face the LaRue County Hawks (10-3) in the 2A Section 4 Semifinals.

The Hawks come into this one riding a four-game winning streak. Their most recent win was over Lincoln County, 52-48, on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Indians come in on a six-game winning streak after a 62-56 win over the Glasgow Scotties.

Junior Michael Harris is the leading scorer by far for the Hawks, averaging nearly 22 points per game. Fellow junior Cole Miller is averaging 11 points per game. If the Indians can win tonight they will move on to the 2A Section 4 Championship, which they last played in during the 2023/2024 season. In that game, they will face the winner of the Taylor County/Marion County game, following the Tribe and the Hawks tonight.

Tip off is scheduled for 5pmCT at the Robe Dome on the campus of Marion County High School, 735 E Main St, Lebanon, KY.

Basketball: Lady Indians host Casey Co. on Thursday

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Thursday, the Adair County Lady Indians return to the court for a home game with the Casey County Lady Rebels (4-10).

The Lady Rebels come off a 38-60 loss at home to Russell County, while the Lady Indians come off a 63-34 win over Glasgow on the road. Senior Elizabeth Forbes is the leading scorer for Casey County, followed by fellow senior Molly Gill, with 13.4 and 7.4 points per game respectively. If past games for Casey County are any indicator, the Lady Indians need to score more than 44 points to bag a win tonight. Casey County is 4-0 when their opponents score 44 points or less, and 0-10 when they score more than 44 points.

The Lady Indians come into tonight's game riding a 2-game winning streak. Another win tonight will give them their longest winning streak of the season. Come out and support your Lady Indians at home tonight. Varsity tip off scheduled for 7pmCT on Thursday, January 8, 2026, in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY. Tickets are available at hometownticketing.com.

KELC releases November 2025 Unemployment Report

From Kim Saylor Brannock

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky's seasonally adjusted November 2025 unemployment rate was 4.7%, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency within the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet.

The November 2025 jobless rate was unchanged from September of 2025 and down 0.7 percentage points from one year ago. State and national estimates of unemployment rates and several other labor market statistics that are based on the survey of households were not available for October due to a lapse in federal appropriations during the six-week federal government shutdown.

The U.S. seasonally adjusted jobless rate for November 2025 was 4.6%, which was up from the 4.4% reported for September 2025 and the 4.2% recorded in November 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
