Basketball: Lady Indians win thriller in Green Co.

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Saturday, January 3, 2025, the Adair County Lady Indians defeated the Green County Dragons 64-61 on the road in double overtime. The game was a thriller. We were tied 16-16 by the end of the first quarter. The Lady Indians ripped off an 11-0 run to open the second quarter, and they lead by nine at the half. However, Green County fought back and cut the Adair County advantage to just three by the end of the third quarter.

Regulation play ended with the game all tied at 48. The first overtime period led to another deadlock, this time 58-58. Tough defense in the final period put the Lady Indians over the top for a 64-61 win.

Sophomore Reese Bardin lead the scoring with 17, followed by senior Kinzlee Akin with 14. Freshman Ella Brown lead the team off the backboard with eight rebounds and 8th grader Ila Loy pulled down seven. The team shot the ball 39% from the floor and 40% from three point range. They shot 60% from the free throw line.

This win for Adair County snaps a streak of 15 straight wins for Green County over Adair County stretching all the way back to 2014. This was also the first recorded double overtime game for the program since 2019, when the team fell 41-40 to Cumberland County in double OT.

The Lady Indians will look to carry the momentum from this win as they prepare for a road trip to take on the Glasgow Lady Scotties (3-9) at 6pmCT on Tuesday, January 8, 2025.

UofL McConnell Scholars visit Columbia

Three students from the University of Louisville's McConnell Center assembled at City Hall in Columbia on Monday, January 5, 2026. Columbia's own Trey Stephens was joined by Elizabethtown's Grant Avis and Louisville's Hannah Cease.

This was the first visit to Columbia for Cease and Avis, who met with Mayor Pamela Hoots and Chief Evan Burton to learn more about the operation of local government and Columbia specifically. After meeting with local leaders they embarked on a tour of Columbia to learn more about the blossoming community and its history.

The McConnell Center is a non-partisan educational institution that seeks to identify, recruit and nurture Kentucky's next generation of great leaders. Core principles of the center are leadership, scholarship, and service.

McConnell Scholars is a four year program at the University of Louisville, where students get enhanced academic experiences outside of the traditional classroom under the direction of Gary L. Gregg, PhD. Programming focuses on the foundations of leadership and political and social thought in America. General opportunities include participating in Socratic-style seminars with UofL faculty and nationally-recognized experts, authors, and leaders on a variety of topics related to American social and political thought.

On Saturday, January 3, 2025, the Adair County Indians defeated the Barren County Trojans 89-74 at home. Tylin George dominated the night, putting up a 30 point triple-double with 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

Dawson Gilbert also had a solid night with 24 points. Landon Blakey posted 17 points and a team-leading 12 rebounds for a double-double. John Shehan also scored in double figures for the Tribe with 11. The team shot 58% from the floor and 40% from three point range.

The Indians now set their sights on the Russell County Lakers (7-6) in the first round of the 2A Sectional. The Lakers come off a 49-59 loss to Monroe County on the road on Friday. They are led in scoring by seniors Maddox Shearer and Dylan Stanelle with 19.8 and 18.2 points per game respectively. Cumberland County is the lone mutual opponent for the two teams. Allyson writes:
I get gas at Buc-ees - - last eeek at $2.19 a gallon. I refuse to buy it in this area and will even now pick up random convenience things there.
On a road trip last week, we found Buc-ees to be the cheapest, and very most expensive, fuel we purchased. -Pen
