May is Better Hearing and Speech Month

From Jill Midkiff/Kim Saylor Brannock

Frankfort, KY - With approximately 15% of American adults reporting difficulty hearing, Gov. Andy Beshear and the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (KCDHH) are encouraging people to learn the signs of hearing loss--and to seek care during Better Hearing and Speech Month in May.

"We know that more than 700,000 Kentuckians of all ages are experiencing some degree of hearing loss. We encourage people to have a professional check their hearing and also to protect their hearing from loud noises," said Gov. Beshear.

Signs of hearing loss in adults include the following:
  • Difficulty following conversations
  • Difficulty hearing in noisy environments
  • Hearing ringing, roaring or beeping in one or both ears
  • Failure to respond to spoken words
  • Muffled hearing
  • Constant frustration hearing speech and other sounds
  • Avoidance of conversation
"Our hearing is key to so many aspects of our lives, but it's something that many people undervalue until they are having severe hearing difficulties," said Virginia Moore, KCDHH executive director. "Even then, some people wait years to receive treatment, if ever. This is despite the fact that audiologists can help people in many different ways.

Kentucky cattle producers celebrate May as Beef Month

From Lisa Tolliver

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky cattle producers and industry representatives joined Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles Monday as he signed a proclamation commemorating the month of May as Kentucky Beef Month.

The top five Kentucky counties for number of beef cattle in 2022 included:
  • Barren - 34,000
  • Pulaski - 29,500
  • Madison - 25,000
  • Breckinridge - 22,000
  • Warren - 21,500 (tie)
  • Bourbon - 21,500 (tie)
"With 895,000 head of beef cattle in the commonwealth, Kentucky remains the state with the largest beef inventory east of the Mississippi River," Commissioner Quarles said. "2022 was a tough year for farmers across our state with high production costs and weather issues that created tornadoes, floods, and droughts, but our beef producers rallied through the issues. I ask that Kentuckians join me in recognizing their effort, hard work, and perseverance as we celebrate May as Kentucky Beef Month."

Kentucky Color: Spring Plow Day

By Billy Joe Fudge
President, Homeplace on Green River, Inc.

Spring Plow Day at Homeplace is always the last Saturday of April and this year's Plow Day, held on Saturday, April 29, 2023, was the most well-attended event since COVID. This date sandwiches right in between Thunder Over Louisville and the Kentucky Derby.

We are proud to host this prestigious equine event each Spring. Prior to tractors, these heavy breed horses and mules powered our nation's agricultural industry, putting billions upon billions of meals on the tables of Americans over the years.

Therefore, each Spring we celebrate and honor their contribution to our culture and the American way of life.
