ACHS Biology students tour water treatment facility From Jennifer Myers ACHS Biology classes have been participating in a grant program through the University of Kentucky. We have had a guest lecturer with us for several weeks, traveling through the different teacher classrooms, talking about viruses in general, COVID-19 and how wastewater can be tested as an indicator of the viral spread. Part of the unit involved a visit to the Columbia Wastewater Treatment Facility, located on Campbellsville St, behind NAPA. Most students admitted that they never considered what actually happened to the water that gets flushed or put down the drain, so our visit really was an eye opening, real world experience! Joining the group were: our guest teacher Jeffrey Chalfant--Graduate Student STEM Education, University of KY; his direct supervisor, Sahar Alameh--Professor of STEM Education, University of KY; Donna McNeil--Research Engineer Associate; Lindell Ormsbee--Professor of Civil Engineering, University of KY; Brian Crump--Supervisor, Columbia Regional Office of the EPA; Steven Breeding--Chief Operator of Plant Operations, Columbia Facility; and Nick Tupman--Plant Operator and Collections, Columbia Facility (former graduate of ACHS). Participating teachers were Rebecca Smith, Ashley Goodin and Denise Grant. 2023-04-27 14:42:30 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Education

KY Mesonet: Remembering the April 1971 tornado outbreak Shane Holinde, Outreach Manager with the KY Mesonet and Climate Center, has posted an in-depth look at the severe weather outbreak of April 27, 1971, at www.kyclimate.org: "On that afternoon, numerous supercells erupted over western and southern portions of Kentucky. Several storms turned tornadic." As he recounts, "The storms only seemed to grow more intense as the night wore on. Green, Adair, and Russell Counties bore the brunt of two massive tornadoes that were responsible for great deal of destruction." There's lots of information about the storms, maps of storm paths, and information about the special challenges forecasters had with the limited information provided by 1970s-era technology.
