Carol Perkins: Being Famous

Previous Column: Opposites Attract

By Carol Perkins

I want to write a letter to Prince Harry and tell him that if he REALLY wants privacy I know a place where he can live where no one will bother him. Probably no one would even know who he was except for the red hair and beard that he wasn't "from these parts." When they heard him speak, they might suspect he wasn't from the United States, but they would only be interested in "What brings you here, young man?"

At least that interests me when I meet people new to our county. I guess they probably think that I mean, "What in the world brought you to this faraway place?" I can't help but wonder.

Smith: I'm here because I was pressing on

By Avary Randall

Campbellsville, KY - Dr. Gerald Smith, professor of history at the University of Kentucky, led Campbellsville University faculty, staff, students and the public in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. recently in Ransdell Chapel.

Smith read from Philippians 3:13-14. "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."

Smith said the depths of the scripture is "I'm pressing on."

Tommy Druen: Revisiting predictability

Previous Column: Home improvement

By Tommy Druen

There was nothing more predictable than an 80s sitcom. Network executives had a tried-and-true formula from which they seldom veered. Professional mom, goofball dad, studious kid with either a sibling or friend who was up to some hijinks . . . and "a very special episode" when it came time to start thinking about the Emmy Awards. Occasionally you got something with an alien, robot or even talking dinosaurs. But they even fit into the mold that was set.

I've revisited some of these shows in the past few years as I've introduced my kids to them. I find myself thinking it's a bit ironic when Full House comes on and theme song leads with "Whatever happened to predictability?" It was right there, plastered on the script. Even with a catch phrase. "How Rude!"

The writers were using predictability as a form of nostalgia, referencing a time that people knew what was likely going to come next. For some that was good, for others bad. Either way, I guess I can see some comfort in knowing what is around the corner.

Is predictability a positive though?

Phillip Coffey - High Hills Living

High Hills Living - By Phillip Coffey

Lived in the high hill's way back in the deep woods.
Seldom saw sunshine until at least the middle of June.
Took all in that he could collect -sometimes up to a month.
Lived under a cone of hushed silence until he joined the Marines.
