JOY Ministries Christmas campaign underway

In one week the Columbia-Adair County Community has donated $12,000 to the J.O.Y. Ministries Annual Christmas Campaign! "This is so amazing - but we still have a ways to go," says J.O.Y Vice President Hannah Peck.

The 2022 J.O.Y. Ministries Christmas Campaign will be J.O.Y.'s largest to date, with a fundraising goal of $45,000. In 2022 JOY opened Ruth's Place, a women & children's shelter. The expenses of operating a multi-unit shelter, continued operation of Cally's House, and meeting the ever-growing needs of the Adair County community are cause for this ambitious goal.

If you would like to support J.O.Y. this holiday season, you can donate today at joy-ministries.org or mail your donation to:
JOY Ministries
114 PO Box
Columbia, KY 42728
The JOY Crisis Resource Center is located at 116 Public Square and is open Mon - Thurs from 11amCT - 5pmCT and Friday 11amCT - 3pmCT.

White Cash Market on the Square in Columbia

Seeing Doug Beard's photo collection including the IGA store in the big snow brought a reminder that cousin Pete Walker once ran a grocery store on the square. I messaged his son John to ask if that was right. John corrected the memory. Hopefully other readers will help us flesh out the story of times when grocery stores were located on the Public Square in Columbia, from White Cash to IGA/Kroger, etc. - LW
John Walker writes: Dad ran the White Cash Market on Burkesville street in the block before you get to where the old public library building used to be. I believe is was where the Western Auto was. It was the White Cash Market before it was Western Auto.

We lived up on Burkesville Street in the big White House across from Hershel Baker Jones' house. Our house number up there was 515. It was part of the old Cundiff farm. The land behind the house was partly sold to the school system. I went to the Columbia Grade Center on top of the hill and walked through the field to go home until we moved down to Reed Street when I had to get used to "urban" living. I still walked up to what was then the Junior High School to catch the bus out to the high school til I graduated from Adair County High School.

Basketball: Raiders steadfast in exhibition at Austin Peay

Clarksville, TN - At the Winfield Dunn Center, the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team braved the homestanding Governors of Austin Peay State University, dropping a 86-61 decision in their second exhibition of the 2022-23 season.

The Blue Raiders played a resilient game offensively, narrowly outshooting their opposition from three-point territory, 36.8 percent to 33.3 percent, and the charity stripe, 85.7 percent to 84.2 percent. There was even a near four-and-a-half-minute stretch in the second half in which the locals outscored the Governors 12-2 without allowing a field goal. In fact, Lindsey Wilson limited the hosts to just six points off of field goals over the final ten minutes of regulation.

Thankful for the Flag in Edmonton

By Cynthia A Meyer

Even though Thanksgiving may have passed as we are now approaching the Christmas Season I am thankful to Sumitomo Electrical Wiring Systems and the City of Edmonton in Metcalfe County for putting forth the effort to erect and maintain the huge American Flag that furls in the wind as you travel the area the Cumberland Parkway or where 68 and Industrial Drive intersect.

It is difficult not to get a lump in one's throat or a tear come your eye no matter how many times you pass by. Nor can one forget when the flag once hung across Highway 68 from the tallest fire engines to salute a local fallen law officer. The massive flag stands tall gallantly blowing in the breeze proudly watching over its sleepy little town.

Many have served under our flag, to those who came home, to those who came home broken, and those that did not come home. It is never too late to say "Thank you." I wish more towns and counties had the same pride as those in Edmonton in Metcalfe County.

Adair County's birthday celebrated quietly by many

Adair County formed 11 December 1801

By Mike Watson

In 1799 Colonel William Casey was elected a member of the convention that formulated the second constitution for the State of Kentucky. He was elected from Green County, which was then a very large county, but with a small population. At that time he resided at his station on Butler's Fork of Russell Creek. Casey's brother-in-law, General Benjamin Logan, represented his county. Gen. Logan's son, William, a lawyer, represented Lincoln County. Gen. Logan's other son, John, was state treasurer, living in Franklin County, and represented that county at the convention. Their combined influence must have been great.

Adair County Formed--By an act of the Kentucky General Assembly, which was approved on December 11, 1801, the county of Adair was formed entirely out of the territory of Green County. The boundary for the county at that time was thus described in the legislative enactment:
"Beginning on Green River, ten miles on a straight line above Green [County] courthouse; thence a line as to strike a point one quarter of a mile due north from Major Daniel Trabue's house; thence a line to strike the Barren County line; thence [from] Barren line to the Cumberland County line; thence with said line to the Wayne County line; thence with the same to the ridge, dividing the waters of Rolling Fork from Casey's Creek; thence to the head of the ridge between Casey's Creek and Robinson's Creek; thence with said ridge to Green River; thence with the same to the beginning."
