Our nation, state and county were now at war with the Axis powers in the struggle that had been building in both Europe and Asia since the beginning of the last decade. Every citizen would be called to combat a global enemy, whether it be in military service overseas or at home, or on the farm, in the factory, or in the classroom, we were all part of this supreme effort. No one who lived during that era would ever forget, nor should we ever forget! Early December 1942 By JIM Early December 1942 found the first anniversary of the Pearl Harbor bombing and America's sudden plunge into World War II fast approaching. Already, many items were rationed, and many more would follow in the coming months. Locally, the decision had been made to not decorate the square in Columbia for the duration of the conflict. Nearly the entirety of the front page of the December 2 edition of the Adair County News was devoted to war news. Woodruff J. Flowers, Jr., had just been promoted to Lieutenant First Class; Warren Shipp had earned his wings a few weeks earlier and shortly thereafter, he and Miss Jane Page Davis were married at Kelly Field, Texas, where Lt. Shipp was taking advanced training. Woodruff's brother Alfred, recently inducted into the Army, was stationed in California. Flags to Half-staff for National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day From Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis Frankfort, KY - In accordance with a proclamation from the White House, Gov. Andy Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022, in observance of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is in memory and honor of the more than 2,400 Americans who died in a surprise attack on the U.S. Naval fleet's Pearl Harbor base in the early-morning hours of Dec. 7, 1941. President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared Dec. 7, 1941, "a day which will live in infamy" and signed the Declaration of War against Japan the following day, Dec. 8. Gov.
