Kentucky Color: Spring is Near

Text and video by Billy Joe Fudge

If you listen closely (you might need to turn up your volume) you will hear one of the first groups of Sandhill Cranes crossing Leatherwood Creek near the Metcalfe/Adair County line. A Southernly tailwind is carrying them Northward and migratory birds are nature's best sign of shorter and less intense Winter cold snaps, and longer warm spells leading to full-blown Spring weather.

Kentucky to build electric vehicle charging network

By Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear today announced that Kentucky can receive as much as $10,280,470 in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for fiscal year 2022 to deploy electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

The money is part of $5 billion available to states over the next five years under the new federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program.

"We know that electric vehicles are the way of the future, and Kentucky is going to be at the center of that transition," said Gov. Beshear. "Kentuckians are going to be making the batteries for these cars, and this will ensure we have the infrastructure in place that will allow Kentuckians to drive and enjoy them."

TJRH 12 Months of Giving: American Red Cross

By Stacey Biggs

Over the past two years, the support for T.J. Regional Health from the communities we serve has been nothing short of amazing. While we are always very involved in the communities we serve, we decided to find ways to go above and beyond in giving back to those who have supported T.J. Regional Health during the ongoing global pandemic.

Each month in 2022, we are putting forth special effort to support local families, charities, partner organizations, students, schools, healthcare workers and more as a way to say "thank you." We call it our 12 Months of T.J. initiative.

In January, our focus was on support for the South Central Kentucky Chapter of the American Red Cross. They are a great partner for our organization and we rely on the ARC for our blood supply.

Carol Perkins: Hip Hop

Previous Column: Invisible Customers

By Carol Perkins

I'm lying on a table that I don't remember getting on. I remember minutes before, I was leaning over another table and having a spinal injection. I asked the nurses around me about the table next to me. "Who is getting on that little table with the footrests?"

One replied, "You are." I was afraid I would fall off. One guy assured me that much, much larger people had laid on this Hana table. I had never seen an operating room because, by the time I usually got there, I was out cold.

Some time in between dreamland and coming to, I heard a pounding like a rubber hammer against a tire. I wasn't feeling any pain and I couldn't ask, but I assumed that hammer was pounding my hip. Later, when I mentioned it to my recovery nurse, she laughed. "Did you hear that?" She was surprised. I don't know what the doctor was hammering, but it had to be something about my hip.

I vowed I was not going to have it done for at least a year, but I reached the point where I wasn't almost crawling.

By Lindsay Bloom

Frankfort, KY - First Lady Britainy Beshear continues to partner with the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence (KCADV) and Kroger in support of the commonwealth's 15 regional domestic violence shelters through the 2022 Shop & Share event Saturday, February 12, 2022, from 9am to 5pm local time.

This year's Shop & Share event once again aligns with Super Bowl weekend, when many Kentuckians visit grocery stores to prepare for Super Bowl celebrations. Kroger stores across the commonwealth, as well as select Food City, Super Dollar, IGA and Save-a-Lot locations are participating.

Kentuckians are encouraged to shop from a list of items needed by domestic violence shelters and then share the items by dropping them at each store's collection site. Volunteers will then deliver the items to the shelters. For a list of participating stores, please visit kcadv.org.

Election Poll workers still needed in Adair County

Election Official Ricky Collins of Columbia reminds everyone that poll workers are needed in order to keep all polling places open in the upcoming 2022 Primary and General Elections. All ages are welcome from 18 to seniors.

Poll workers will be paid for Election day and for attending a two hour election school training. With the new HB574 Bill, most voters are eligible, regardless of political affiliation.

Community volunteer Richard Phelps heard Ricky's message and says he is thinking of helping out. Unless enough Poll workers step up some of the precincts will have to be closed.

For more information about becoming a poll worker, please call The Adair County Clerk's Office at 270-384-2801 or send an email to Lisa.Greer@ky.gov.
