Frankfort, KY - On Monday, January 24, 2022, the Governor provided an update related to the deadly tornadoes that occurred this past December.

Nearly $25 million in SBA disaster loans has been approved for homeowners, renters and businesses. The Governor reminded those who need to apply for FEMA assistance to do so by Friday, Feb. 11. Gov. Beshear provides update on COVID-19

By Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, January 24, 2022, Gov. Andy Beshear said that his son, Will, tested positive for COVID-19 and is generally asymptomatic, adding that his son is fully vaccinated and recently received his booster shot. The Governor and the rest of the family tested negative for the virus today. The Governor was tested twice today and said he will continue to be tested daily and follow U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

Gov. Beshear joined today's briefing remotely to provide an update on COVID-19 and tornado relief. He encouraged parents to get their children vaccinated and boosted if they are eligible.

"My son is generally asymptomatic, we believe because he is vaccinated and boosted," said Gov. Beshear. "In fact, he is shooting basketball right now, by himself. The vaccines and booster truly protected him."

The Governor said among Kentucky children ages 5 to 11, only 13.3% are fully vaccinated.

"Approximately 25% of new COVID-19 cases reported each day in Kentucky are children. Vaccination provides assurance that children can remain in school and protected against COVID-19," said Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health. "For parents who have not yet vaccinated your children, I encourage you to talk with your pediatrician. It's important that you make an informed decision and have confidence that you are taking important steps to keep your children safe from this disease that has caused so much harm to our families and communities."

Odd Fauna of Adair County

By JIM

Odd Fauna of Adair County: skinny snakes, fighting fowl, cryptocritters, and others. A sampling of odd critters mentioned in The News 1902-1923. (Some of these reports are best seasoned with several grains of salt.)

  • Mr. Irvin Blair while working the road last Friday, dug up a grubb-worm that had started to turn into a sasefras sprout. He sent it to this office and the sprout was fully an inch long and showed it to be sarsafras. The worm had begun to shrink. The sprout had started out of the worm near the mouth. This may seem strange but it's true and proves the correctness of the contention that grubb-worms produce sarsafras. (March 26, 1902) (Note the imaginative spellings of sassafras!)

  • Dr. W.T. Grissom has exhibited a curiosity at this office in the way of a worm. It is six inches long, one inch in diameter, has horns and fights with its tail. It is the only one of its kind been found in this section and is attracting a great deal of curiosity. (September 20, 1905)

  • Messrs. N.B. Kelsay, H.C. Hudson and O.B. Harvey killed a snake a few days ago that measured nine feet and five inches in length and only 3/4 of an inch in diameter. This was a rather large and peculiar snake, but was not too large nor too peculiar to be killed by these three gentlemen. In fact, we have serious doubts as to whether there could be another trio of gentlemen found in this section who could kill a snake of the above dimensions. (Glensfork newsletter, July 15, 1908.)

(Footnote to the foregoing bit of serpent news: Did you ever hear of the Great Cabbage Snake Scare of c. 1904-06? The scare was quite real but the cabbage snake itself was of questionable authenticity--or so the Gummint said.........)

Four Adair Co. residents compete at LWC Begley Scholars Day

By Travis Smith

Lindsey Wilson College held its 25th Scholars Day on Saturday, January 22, 2022. The Begley Scholars program, named after LWC's 6th President John B. Begley, was launched in 1997 and is to this day the most prestigious scholarship awarded by the college. The three incoming freshmen that receive the scholarship are granted full tuition, room and board for their four years at Lindsey Wilson College. Trips to Hemingway's "Great American Cities", research projects and a multitude of other activities also encompass the Begley Scholar experience.

More than 40 high school seniors from various parts of Kentucky, Tennessee and Nevada came to LWC's A.P. White Campus Saturday for the annual Scholars Day. Among the students competing for the prestigious scholarship were the following Adair Co. residents:
  • Sadie Kemp
  • Amber Loy
  • Randall Camfield
  • Braxton Smith
The candidates spent the morning interviewing with panels made up of LWC professors, staff, students and alumni. Parents learned more about Lindsey Wilson College in their own session and all of the candidates took part in ice-breaker games to get to know one another. Masks and social distancing guidelines were followed during the event.

Later this spring, three high school seniors who attended Saturday's invitation-only event will be named John B. Begley Scholars, LWC's most prestigious scholarship.
