CU holds Professional Dining Etiquette program for students

By Gerard Flanagan

Campbellsville, KY - A first impression can make or break someone's chances of landing a job or promotion. With that in mind, Campbellsville University Office of Career Services hosted a professional dining etiquette program recently in the Badgett Academic Support Center (BASC) Banquet Hall.

According to Teresa Elmore, director of career services, the event had a total of 46 participants.

"This event allowed students to learn 'hands-on' dining etiquette rules - especially important prior to graduating and beginning job interviews with prospective employers," Elmore said. "Sometimes second interviews take place in a restaurant, so employers can predict how this person will represent their company in social and professional situations if hired. This event allows students to learn and practice."

Terri Thompson, a business and social etiquette specialist from Paris, Ky., was the speaker at the event. During her presentation, Thompson went over several rules for dining etiquette.

Homeplace on Green River 2021 Fall Newsletter

By Billy Joe Fudge
President, Homeplace on Green River, Inc.

December is the first month of meteorological winter. I like simple, and meteorological seasons are more easy to negotiate than the astronomical seasons. Meteorological winter (December, January, February) is the three coldest months in the Northern Hemisphere and meteorological summer (June, July, August) is the hottest three months. Spring of course, is the three months between winter and summer, and fall is the three months between summer and winter. I don't have to know the angle at which the sunlight is striking the Earth, whether or not it is Leap Year, what day or what week it might be. To know the season I only need to know what month it might be at any given time.

So, that being said, now that December 2021 (winter) has rolled around, I at long last have the opportunity to share with you a trifecta of main events that made for a great fall at Homeplace. One main event celebrated the harvest; one celebrated the wisdom of our subsistence farmer forefathers' preparations for their cold, dark and long winters ahead and one looked forward to 2022 and beyond. A 2022 that is going to be a year of growth in our ability "to protect and promote rural American culture through the sustainability of agriculture and natural resources, utilizing education, conservation and the economic opportunities of agritourism".

Christmas around the Square, 1931

December 1931 found much of the world mired in economic depression. In America, a deflationary spiral continued; the money supply, industrial output, and the stock market all seemed headed for the basement as unemployment increased; and property foreclosures occupied more and more column-inches in newspapers across the nation.

By JIM

But meanwhile, around the Square in Columbia, any number of merchants offered nice lines of Christmas finery for those fortunate enough to have a bit of discretionary jingle-jangle in their pockets. In the fashion of the era, however, no Christmas ads appeared until after Thanksgiving.

Lany Bray & Co., in the east corner of the square, offered "a lovely tie, a nice pair of kid gloves, beautiful scarf, silk sox, or one of our new Elder shirts, 98c and $1.50" for the gentleman. A half-page in the December 2nd paper touted a plethora of other tempting Christmas goodies -- and a chance to meet Santa Claus himself in the store on Saturday, December 5th.

Near the south corner, Miss Lula Jones reminded her customers that with Christmas gifting in the air, "Hummingbird Full Fashioned Hosiery packed in individual gift boxes makes the ideal present for mother, wife, sister, daughter."

Paull Drug in the west corner carried an assortment of eye catching gifts for grown ups as well as "dolls of all kinds" for the wee folk, and Brown Drug in the Jones Block offered a potpourri of tempting items for the adults, dolls in a wide variety of price points, and "trains and other mechanical toys that will fascinate the little ones, both boys and girls."
