Comer pushes for action on massive delays on veterans records

By Matt Smith

Washington, DC -- Congressman James Comer (R-Ky.) and a group of Republican lawmakers wrote Archivist of the United States David Ferriero regarding the massive delays veterans and their families are encountering while requesting their records from the National Personnel Records Center (NRPC).

The NRPC stores the personnel, health, and medical records of military personnel--active, discharged, and deceased from all branches. As of March 2021, there was a backlog of almost half a million records requests. These records are often necessary for proceeding with a military burial, obtaining VA benefits, and more.

"Delayed release of military records is absolutely unacceptable. The National Personnel Records Center failed to adapt to the pandemic, and it resulted in almost half a million backlogged requests for records. Holding these records hostage inevitably delays military funerals, benefits payments, access to veteran shelters, decisions on VA claims, and more. Our military men and women and their families deserve far better than these delays. NRPC must clean up its act, address the backlog immediately, and give these families and Congress an explanation and timeline for fixing it," said Congressman Comer.

Frankfort, KY - The latest in a string of positive economic news, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Tuesday that 27 Kentucky Main Street Program (KYMS) communities finished last year strong with a reported $45.5 million cumulative investment in downtown commercial districts in 2020.

KY Individual Income Tax Filing Deadline is May 17

By Jill Midkiff

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Revenue (DOR) reminds taxpayers that the 2020 state individual income tax filing deadline is coming up on Monday, May 17, 2021.

At the direction of Gov. Andy Beshear and in accordance with Senate Bill 321, the individual income tax filing deadline was extended by one month in response to continued disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This postponement followed the income tax relief provisions issued March 17, 2021, by the federal Internal Revenue Service in response to delays and disruptions caused by the ongoing response to the novel coronavirus worldwide health pandemic.

Individual taxpayers have until next Monday, May 17, 2021, to submit Kentucky individual income tax payments for the 2020 tax year without accruing penalties and interest, regardless of the amount owed. Penalties, interest and additions to tax will begin to accrue on any remaining unpaid balances after May 17, 2021.
