May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

By Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - In recognition of May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) joins the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in reminding motorists and motorcyclists to "share the road" to help prevent crashes, injuries and deaths on Kentucky roadways.

"Safety is a mutual responsibility for motorists and motorcyclists alike," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "We're entering the warmer months and that typically means more drivers may operate motorcycles on our roadways. With more than 95,000 registered motorcycles in Kentucky, all road users must stay alert and look out for one another."

According to NHTSA, per vehicle miles traveled, motorcyclists are approximately 28 times more likely than people in passenger cars to die in a traffic crash. Additionally, when motorcycles and other vehicles collide, it is usually the other (non-motorcycle) driver who violates the motorcyclist's right-of-way.

First Lady Beshear promotes Shop & Share event

First Lady continues partnership in support of Kentucky's domestic violence shelters

By Crystal Staley/Lindsay Bloom

Frankfort, KY - First Lady Britainy Beshear joins the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence (KCADV) and Kroger to ask Kentuckians for help supporting the commonwealth's 15 regional domestic violence shelters through the annual Shop & Share event.

"KCADV's domestic violence programs provide life-saving shelter and support for women, men and families in need," said First Lady Beshear. "I am proud to take part in Shop and Share with Kroger this Saturday to support KCADV's critical work, and I invite all Kentuckians to join me by visiting their local Kroger store. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those who need us most."

Shop and Share will take place this Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. During that time, grocery shoppers are invited to shop for what they need and to share an item that will be given to a local domestic violence program by depositing it in a collection area upon leaving the store.

Governor: Changes to gathering guidelines coming May 28

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Thursday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that on May 28, all events and businesses with 1,000 or fewer people present can increase to 75% capacity.

In addition, starting May 28, indoor and outdoor events with more than 1,000 people can be held at 60% capacity.

"The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now projecting a sharp decline in COVID-19 cases by July. I'm hoping we'll be fully done with all capacity restrictions by July. That is my expectation," said Gov. Beshear. "We don't have to be patient for that much longer, but we do have to finish our work and protect the people around us."

The Governor also clarified that small groups of individuals are no longer mandated to wear facial coverings indoors in private businesses or homes if all individuals present have received the final dose of a COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior.

LCDHD: Three days in a row of increasing Covid cases

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Again, today we report a high number of new cases compared to last week. This is 3 days in a row of increased numbers. This is concerning. The last thing anyone wants is another area surge. This week serves as a reminder that the pandemic is not over, and that our citizens need to take the vaccine.

We added several more cases today than for the same time period last week, so our 7-day average incidence rate per 100,000 went up significantly. Our 7-day average incidence chart is now showing 1 county in the "green-on-track" range, Cumberland; 4 counties in the "yellow-community-spread" category, Clinton, Green, McCreary, and Wayne; and 5 counties in the "orange-accelerated" range of community-spread: Adair, Casey, Pulaski, Russell, and Taylor. We are thankful to not have any "red-critical" counties now. Keep in mind, some of our 7-day-incidence data will be skewed over the next few days as we are reconciling our data against the state data.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 3.51%.
