Red Bird in the 1960s

Click title for album with 3 photos.

Red Bird Mission is a ministry in far southern Clay County, about six miles north of Beverly, Kentucky, on the banks of the Red Bird River. The mission operates a clinic and the Red Bird Christian School.

Gary Hornbaker's father was a minister in the EUB Church in Red Bird Mission in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Gary has shared some of his father's photos from that time.

Gary writes, "We got stuck in the snow many times in this bus. The mission picture is in the fall 1961, the bus picture was taken at a different time maybe a little later into winter I suppose."

Taxes are what we pay for a civilized society

By Wendy Butler Burt

Engraved on the the pediment of the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, DC, is the famous quote from Oliver Wendell Holmes, "Taxes are what we pay for a civilized society." I agree.

I've followed with interest recent comments in ColumbiaMagazine.com regarding the county's need to increase taxes. And while I do not have an opinion about what would be the best source of additional tax revenue, it is clear that taxes need to be increased to support public safety (sheriff, fire, etc.), schools, roads (paving, snow removal, etc.), public health (EMS, 911, county health dept., etc), trash disposal (transfer station, recycling center, roadside trash pick-up, etc.), general quality of life (library, Extension, parks & recreation, etc.), animal shelter, and so much more.

I've lived here for over 12 years and again and again have reflected on the grim reality that all of us in Adair County pay an exceedingly high price for the low taxes we now pay. I've lived in very high tax jurisdictions and, given the choice between the services we receive for the "starvation level" taxes we pay in Adair County and simply sufficient -- or even generous -- public services I've received in other jurisdictions, I'd pay higher taxes every time.

KYTC: Motorists advised to slow down, watch for plows

By Naitore Djigbenou/Chuck Wolfe

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) snowfighters are on standby throughout most of the commonwealth ready to treat and clear roadways of snow and ice. Several crews are pre-treating state routes to aid with the removal of snow expected this evening into tomorrow morning.

Much of the state is under a winter weather advisory. Temperatures may drop to the lower twenties tonight into tomorrow morning, creating the potential for slick road conditions. Motorists are advised to reduce speeds and give plows plenty of room on the roads, especially during the evening commute.

KYTC salt and snow plow crews across a wide area of Kentucky are on duty monitoring weather and road conditions and stand ready to respond.

Positivity rate declines, vaccine supplies increasing

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear said the state's positivity rate declined again. He also reminded Kentuckians that the federal government will increase each state's supply of COVID-19 vaccines and guarantee a minimum supply for three consecutive weeks.

"The top-line message on vaccines is the same as it has been: Our one issue is supply. If we had three issues, they would be supply, supply and supply. We'll figure out the distribution and we're going to continue to improve. Our only limitation at this point is the number of doses we can get from the federal government," said Gov. Beshear.

The Governor said the state had three specific challenges, all related to a limited supply of the vaccine. First, the small number of doses the state receives compared to the very large number of health care providers who would like to distribute it. Second, the state does not have enough vaccine doses or small enough vaccine batches to distribute them equitably on a county by county basis - instead the state is distributing equitably by region. Finally, as the state moves into larger and larger phases, the type of infrastructure needed from providers to accommodate patient needs changes.

Gov. Beshear said tomorrow he will announce more information on the state's regional vaccine partners and the first Kroger Health regional vaccination center.

Letter: Present options, make a decision

Shannon Sexton writes:
Quote from your article: "However, the crowd of interested citizens didn't total as many as might be found shopping early Sunday morning at Walmart. Fifteen people attended in addition to members of the Court, plus there were around 150 people active on the court's Facebook site."

Do not assume the lack of attendance at a 4:30pm meeting reflects the lack of concern by citizens of Adair Co. A large amount of "working people" in this county do not get off work until 5pm or after. I watched live on Facebook from work and finished up on my drive home. 212 minimum attended the live feed, as I screen shot it for this very reason. Make no mistake, people are very much concerned and eager to see a FIRM plan of action presented from the county - whether it be suggested cuts or suggested tax rates. Grab the bull by the horns and put two options on the table. Take some comments and opinions, then do what so many of us has done during this trying time - make some hard decisions.
Comments re: Tax response from Adair County citizens: don't do it

A tribute to Missy Grider from Coffey's Vet Center

From Dr. Janice Coffey and Staff

It is with great sorrow that we say goodbye to our beloved Missy. As many of you know, Missy Grider has been an absolute anchor in our veterinary practice for nearly 15 years. She has been one to advocate for treatments and care and bend the will of the world to get help for many, many animals. Missy could always find a way to move Heaven and Earth to get help for the least of these even volunteering to foster tiny babies in her home to give them a chance at life when needed.

The terms "friend" and "employee" do not even start to do her justice. Only the word "family" comes to mind as I reflect on her years with us. Missy was and will always be family to me and I hope we can make her proud as we try to follow her example of patient advocacy and ensure that Missy's heart will always live here.

We ask your patience and compassion as we try to carry on in the face of this devastating loss to our work family and mourn the loss of one of the better angels of our time. We are here to do our best and Missy will be watching. --Dr. Janice Coffey and Staff

Letter: Time to look at combined city/county government

Steve Smith writes:
We are all concerned with the possibility of additional taxes. I think its time to look at a combined city and county entity. This would eliminate the need for additional taxes. It's time we look at the best way to handle this problem that we have been facing for several years. I would like to challenge our officials to look at this option. Otherwise we will have to cut services or increase taxes! --Steve Smith

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 1/26/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

The Lake Cumberland area will continue in Phase 1a of our COVID-19 response, but has now also expanded into 1b, first responders and school staff. Also, do not forget about the federal contract with Walgreens and CVS pharmacies to vaccinate the long-term care facilities and personal care homes -- residents and staff. It is our understanding that almost every nursing home in the state has been visited by either CVS or Walgreens to administer prime/1st doses of the vaccine.

The Lake Cumberland District's health departments are not pre-registering for future vaccination phases currently, as we have not been authorized to order additional first dose vaccines, nor have we been promised that we will be allowed to do so in the future.

The only prime/1st dose vaccines coming into the Lake Cumberland area at present are the 500 doses per week that are coming to the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. Their COVID-19 hotline phone number is 1-844-675-3390. Also, select providers are receiving vaccine for school staff.

Counties where 1st Dose School Clinics are Complete/Largely Complete:
  • Taylor County the week of 1/8/21 by Taylor Regional Hospital with approximately 300 vaccinations administered.
  • Casey County on 1/20/21 by Cumberland Family Medical with approximately 150 vaccinations administered.
  • Adair County on 1/22/21 by Cumberland Family Medical with approximately 200 vaccinations administered.
  • Clinton County on 1/22/21 by Cumberland Family Medical with approximately 160 vaccinations administered.

Tax response from Adair County citizens: don't do it

The Adair County Fiscal Court's second meeting of the first month of 2021 was moved from the Courthouse Annex to the gym at Blair Park in anticipation of a large crowd responding to the mention of a possible tax increase.

However, the crowd of interested citizens didn’t total as many as might be found shopping early Sunday morning at Walmart. Fifteen people attended in addition to members of the Court, plus there were around 150 people active on the court's Facebook site.

There were judgments, debates and questions during the two-hour meeting and the bottom line from the citizens who attended and watched online seemed to be - get your money somewhere else, not from an Adair County tax increase.
