ACHS Spring Concert features Aeriyal Desiree Anderson

2019-05-01 - Photo from music director Ginna Franklin.
You can hear Aeriyal Desiree Anderson sing in the Spring Concert is at Columbia United Methodist Church, 7pmCT on May 16, 2019. She writes, "I have been singing since I could talk. I love being able to express myself through music and I love how you can discover so much diversity with your voice. It really just gives me a way to be myself without feeling bad about it. Singing brings me so much joy because you can really do it anywhere.

"I never really thought I could sing; I just liked to do it. However, by being in choir, my voice has advanced/improved in many ways. Choir is a lot of hard work and I am so happy I got the opportunity to sing with so many amazing girls and I'm so thankful I got the chance to be in Mrs. Franklin's class. I love them!" She is a nineth grader at ACHS, the daughter of Donna Goodin, her foster mom, and Desmond Anderson, her biological dad, and lives in Knifley, KY. She sings Second Soprano in the choir. She hopes to see you at the Spring Concert!

Letter: need help finding lyrics to This Old House

Joyce Coomer writes:
Have have these words to a song running through my head the past couple of days . . .

“This old house ain't got no windows
This old house ain't got no doors
This old house ain't got no people
This old house ain't got no floors.”

Only place I can find the first two lines is in a book -- The Pastures of Beyond: An Old Cowboy Looks Back at the Old West by Dayton O. Hyde. They are attributed to Rex Allen.

I remember people in the neighborhood singing this when I was a kid. Would like to have the entire lyrics.

If anyone has the lyrics or a place I can find them, I'd appreciate it. This isn't the same song that the Statler Brothers recorded -- close but not quite the same. -- Joyce M. Coomer

Two die in Raywick residential fire

By Stevie Lowery, The Lebanon Enterprise

Sara Frances Love and Maxine Irene Love, the residents of a home that was destroyed by fire on Highview Pike in Raywick last week, led very private lives. So much so, their house was almost entirely hidden from the rest of the world. Trees and brush concealed their two-story home, which is undoubtedly the way they wanted it.

They valued their privacy.

Early April 24, at approximately 6:30 a.m., a school bus driver reported a house on fire at 100 Highview Pike in Raywick, according to Sheriff Clements. The Raywick Fire Department initially responded, and fire fighters from multiple departments were on scene until Wednesday evening when remains of two bodies were found. The medical examiner in Louisville is currently working to identify the remains.

May is National Mental Health Month

By Doug Hogan/Beth Fisher

Frankfort, KY -. (May 1, 2019) - An estimated one in five, 20% of Americans, struggle with mental illness or other mental health issues. In conjunction with Mental Health Month, in May, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) is joining behavioral health organizations around the state and nation to increase public knowledge and spur action to boost mental health and general wellness.

The Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental, and Intellectual Disabilities (BHDID), within CHFS, encourages everyone to consider donating items to a community service organization this month. BHDID leadership say the donation drive's mission is twofold: it serves a population in need and has mental health benefits for those who participate.

"We all know somebody dealing with mental health issues, whether it's someone in our own family or at church, school, or work. Mental illness and mental health issues are more common than people recognize," said BHDID Commissioner Wendy Morris. "Engaging in service projects is great for your well-being. We encourage all Kentuckians to look for service projects within their community, and to take time to acknowledge the importance of self-care and your mental health."

Carol Perkins: Bless your heart

Previous column: Evolving interests

By Carol Perkins

When I still owned my screenprinting shop and was opening for business one morning, to my surprise, a lovely couple came to see me from out-of-town. They had once lived here and were "passing through" and thought they'd stop in, is what they said. We chatted for a little while, and I was still reeling from the fact that they would stop to see me since we weren't especially close friends. How nice of them, I was thinking. I didn't realize that they cared that much of me. I was soaring in my misconception.

Not long into our conversation about their life elsewhere, they told me of a new business they had just gotten involved in. I'm thinking, "Awe Ha, here we go." As I listened, I grew more and more disappointed. Not focusing on what their new weight loss product might do for me, I was astounded at the gall of them to bring the product to me. They wanted me to "sign up" and sell their product. Here are the words that stung:
