Strong passwords are key to data privacy

Department of Financial Institutions offers password tip

FRANKFORT, KY (Fri 27 Jan 2017) - The Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) is promoting national Data Privacy Day on Saturday, Jan. 28, by encouraging Kentuckians to create strong online passwords to keep their personal information secure.

Data Privacy Day is an international effort led by The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) to raise awareness about the importance of protecting personal information. According to NCSA, weak or stolen credentials, including passwords, are a leading cause of online data breaches.

FRANKFORT, KY (27 Jan 2017) - A 42-year-old coal miner was killed Thursday in an accident in an underground Pike County mine. Ray Hatfield, of Hi Hat KY, a conveyor belt attendant with 23 years of experience, suffered fatal injuries inside the R&C Coal LLC Mine No. 2 in Pikeville.

Dr. Timothy C. Caboni named 10th president at WKU

The WKU Board of Regents today (Jan. 27) selected Dr. Timothy C. Caboni as the University's 10th president. Dr. Caboni will begin his duties July 1 following the retirement of President Gary A. Ransdell.

"The Presidential Search Committee and the WKU Board of Regents spent countless hours over the last 11 months identifying the attributes we believe are the most critical in our next president to assure the continued growth and relevance of WKU," Board of Regents Chair Frederick A. Higdon of Lebanon said. "Dr. Caboni's blend of academic and administrative experience and his expertise in external relations have prepared him well to lead WKU's next chapter and build on the remarkable transformation we've achieved over the past 20 years."

Dr. Caboni, 47, currently Vice Chancellor of Public Affairs at the University of Kansas, said he was excited about returning to lead his alma mater. He earned a master's degree in corporate and organizational communication from WKU in 1994.

New canoeing and kayaking page on KFW Website

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Wildlife Resources recently launched a canoeing and kayaking page on its website at fw.ky.gov.

The page provides a repository for valuable information about paddling creeks, rivers and lakes across Kentucky.

"The new canoe and kayak page is now easier to find and allows users to quickly navigate the page to see department programs and resources to help plan a safe paddling trip," said Gregory Johnson, Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "This new page provides everything you need to know to paddle a new section of water including optimal water flow, fishing tips, and where to put in and take out. I personally use both the Bluewater Trails articles and the Stream Fishing page every time I plan a trip on new waters."

LWC Basketball visits Life for Saturday doubleheader

The Lindsey Wilson men's and women's basketball teams return to Mid-South Conference play this Saturday as they travel to the Eagles' Nest Gymnasium, 800 Huntington Rd, Marietta, GA, to take on Life University.

The No. 4-ranked Blue Raider women's team (21-0, 7-0 MSC) takes the court first at 1pmCT with the men's team to follow at 3pmCT.

Campbellsville, KY - Dr. Joe Early, associate professor of theology, and Dr. Donna Hedgepath, vice president for academic affairs, will lead Campbellsville University's Wednesday morning chapel service on February 1.

The service will address dilemmas students and professors alike might face on campus and in class in order to help prevent them. These include ethical dilemmas such as plagiarism, cheating, the sharing of data and accidental plagiarism.

KYTC offers scholarships for civil engineering students

Scholarship program includes tuition assistance, summer work and employment upon graduation

Frankfort, KY - Continuing one of the Commonwealth's most attractive postsecondary education opportunities, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will award up to 30 new scholarships for the 2017-2018 school year for students pursuing civil engineering and engineering technology degrees. Interested students must apply by the Feb. 1 deadline.

As many as 20 competitive civil engineering scholarships will be awarded for students to attend the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Western Kentucky University or Kentucky State University. In addition to gaining tuition assistance, scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to work during the summers and are guaranteed post-graduation employment.

Reading Madness at ACES

School-wide initiative encourages reading with friendly competition

A new reading initiative at Adair County Elementary School has students tearing into books at every opportunity. "Reading Madness" started last Friday and will run for through April, pitting teams of students against one another in a bracket-style competition to earn Accelerated Reader points. Just one week in, the students have already scored, collectively, more than 2,170 AR points.

"It's really taken off," says ACES Principal Steve Burton. "Our kids are excited and they are reading."

LWC tennis opens up 2017 season Friday

The Lindsey Wilson men's and women's tennis teams open up the 2017 season in Richmond, Kentucky on Friday. The men's team faces Eastern Kentucky at 12 pmCT at the Greg Adams Tennis Center. The women's team takes on Western Carolina at 4pmCT at the Greg Adams Tennis Center, 521 Lancaster Ave., Richmond, KY.

The No. 8-ranked men's tennis team advanced to the NAIA National Semifinals last season. The Blue Raiders won their 12th regular season Mid-South Conference regular season championship in 13 years and also won the MSC Tournament.
