Gov. Bevin applauds passage of State budget

Compromise budget represents an unprecedented commitment to State Pension Systems

From Gov. Bevin's Communications Office

FRANKFORT, KY (Fri 15 Apr, 2016) - The following is a statement from Governor Matt Bevin on budget passage:
"The citizens of Kentucky appreciate the hard work that was put into this bipartisan budget agreement. I personally thank Senate President Stivers, House Speaker Stumbo and the members of the General Assembly for ensuring that we keep our commitment to state employees, teachers and retirees. I am proud to say that we have invested more in our state pensions than ever before. This was the right and necessary thing to do.

"Everyone came together bringing different viewpoints to the table. The result is that we have a budget that is going to put Kentucky on solid financial footing. It is conservative, focuses on important current priorities and also saves for the future. This budget sends a strong signal to the financial and business communities that we take our financial obligations seriously. I look forward to reviewing the details of the final bill over the coming days and signing a fiscally responsible budget into law."

Remembering James Howard Young (1922-2016)

Unforgettable James Howard Young. The epitome of a Southern Gentleman
James Howard Young, Edmonton, KY (1922-2016)

By Wally Burress

I'll always remember Mr. Young. I always enjoyed by visits with him and Mrs. Young. They were so gracious and such proper hosts.

He loved animals and, I guess, that is what drew me to him. I recall seeing a photo of Mr. Young in Senior Quest Magazine. That dog, a Weimaraner, and his most expensive one. He said that dog cost him $500 to pick up at the airport in Louisville after his daughter had it shipped to him from Washington, D.C.

IRS scam by phone heavy this season, hang up!

Hang up on the IRS? You bet, since they never call and tell you you'll go to jail if you don't pay now, if you don't give financial information over the phone or that you may have a big refund coming if you just give your bank info -- hang up even if they have some of your personal numbers, even if they sound very convincing using local sounding names, even if they sound like your family, just hang up. The real IRS will never ask for financial nor banking information over the phone. The real IRS will send you a letter through the United States Postal Service.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) shows a recent increase in local phone scams across the country, with callers pretending to be from the IRS in hopes of stealing money or identities from victims.

These phone scams include many variations, ranging from instances from where callers say the victims owe money or are entitled to a huge refund.
