High School SBDM Council will decide number of vo-ag teachers

ACHS Site Based Decision Making Council will decide whether third Vo-Ag position will be filled following retirement of one teacher. Or whether two will suffice in order to add a foreign language instructor, fine arts teacher or other teaching position at Adair County High School
Click on Headline for complete article including comparison chart for Adair and five of six surround county high schools

By Supt. Alan W. Reed
Adair County School District, Columbia, KY

Some misinformation is circulating regarding a replacement for an upcoming retirement in our Vocational Agriculture program at Adair County High School. I want to clear things up as much as possible.

The site-based decision-making council at Adair County High School will decide whether three (3) teachers are required in the Vocational Agriculture program, or whether two (2) will work in order to add a foreign language instructor, fine arts teacher, or a some other teaching position in the state assessed areas.

This decision shall be driven by the school's CSIP (Comprehensive Schoolwide Improvement Plan). The council will have to balance their "needs" against their "wants" in any department, given test scores and rigorous state expectations. Proposed federal and state budget cuts of around 8-10 percent will also impact every school in Adair County over the next five years requiring school councils to maximize every instructional dollar. While no one likes budget cuts, there are now opportunities for whole departments to reinvent themselves.

Under statute, the ACHS school council and its principal decide staffing issues within the school, based on relevant data as it pertains to school success. Under board policy, each school is provided with allocations based on the district's staffing formula.

This issue and other topics will be addressed at the Adair County High School monthly Site-based Council meeting on August 20, 2012 at 3:15 p.m. The meeting will be held at 3:15 in the ACHS library, and as always is open to the public.

Finally, here are some comparison numbers from surrounding counties that also have highly successful programs in Vocational Agriculture:
TEACHERS VS. STUDENTS
IN AREA VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE PROGRAMS

End of 2012
  • Adair - 3 - 847
  • Cumberland - 1 - 250
  • Green - 1.5 - 520
  • Metcalfe - 2 - 460
  • Russell - 2 - 885
  • Taylor - 2 - 888

Secure job at Russell County Hospital

Writer remembers early days in 1980 when the hospital had an excellent CEO, an excellent Director of Nursing, and a competent Board of Directors - and when the hospital always ran in the black. Hopes those responsible for the 2004 forward mess get their just reward. Says she's encouraged by the interest in getting honest answers

Carole Thomas writes:
As a 35 year veteran R.N, I am thankful that I do not find myself in the midst of the mess at Westlake.

As a healthcare professional, I hope that as Westlake and Adair County finds it's way out of this mess, that I can again someday speak of Westlake without shame and embarrassment.

There was a time that I was proud to be associated with Westlake, which was back in 1980 when we opened the hospital with an excellent CEO, Jerry Miller, and also an excellent Director of Nursing, Jean Meyer, and a competent Board of Directors. The hospital always ran in the black during that administration.

I hope that the ones responsible for the mess that started in 2004 will get their just reward, no matter what their administrative positions were. Adair County is angry and rightfully so.- Carole Thomas

Spectrum rep claims amount of rejected offer: CONFIDENTIAL

And that's the problem, questioner says. Details are held from taxpaying public. But shouldn't the people know what the "Shortfall" is?

Click on headline for story with photo(s)

    By Ed Waggener

The biggest and most telling thing to come out of the community meeting with Congressman Ed Whitfield, yesterday was a direct question to Westlake Temporary CEO and Spectrum Healthcare partner Rodger Klein as to whether, in fact, Lifepoint had lowered its bid for the hospital to $2 million.

Klein responded that the negotiations were "Confidential."

And the questioner, Ralph Waggener, responded, "Confidential!" that's what got us into this mess in the first place. "Everything's kept secret."

Tax petition: Voting in last presidential election not requirement

The only relevance is that the number of qualified signers needed is equal to 10% of the total votes cast in Adair County in the last presidential election

    Crystal Kimbler writes:
To my knowledge the (writer names two elements of the Adair County media mix not including us, but I'm not giving them a lot of free publicity here by naming them - EW) had publicly announced that in order to sign the hospital tax recall petition you had to have voted in the last presidential election, and that is not true. The amount of signatures needed is based on the number of voters in the last presidential election.

The number of signatures needed is based on the number of voters in the last presidential election.

So the only requirements which are needed to sign the petition is: You must be registered to vote in Adair County, and you must sign listing your precinct. -Crystal Kimbler
Thanks, Crystal Kimbler: Adair County Clerk Sheila Blair called to tell us essentially the same thing. -Ed Waggener

Today's selection is great, especially if you've been wanting a great variety of tomatoes, purple hulls, watermelons and cantaloupes. No, we don't have any sweet corn, and what that means to the savvy grower is to be in that business next year. I have Purple Hull Peas. When I came up here to the Far North, they told me Purple Hulls wouldn't grow here. But mine are.

The Southernization of Adair County continues, thank you very much. I'm already planning my orders for next year. I'll have Purple Hull Peas, Blackeyed Peas, and Cream Peas - and maybe even have some of these in my High Tunnell greenhouse.
