Sparksville Elevated Water Tower: Steel bowl fabrication stage

2012-01-25 - Weed-Sparksville Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Workmen for Caldwell Tank Company of Louisville, KY were busy at just before 5pmCT, Wednesday, January 25, 2012, fabricating the 750,000 gallon steel bowl which will be raised to the top of the structure, secured into place, and then have to be steel capped. When completed, the tower will serve most of the southern half of Adair County and will replace three stand pipes. Besides providing clean water to homes and businesses, the tank will assure adequate pressure to add fire hydrants for fire protection, and the capacity will allow exportation of surplus water. The work is part of an accelerated infrastructure expansion and replacement by the Columbia/Adair County Utilities District at the most opportune time: When grants and low cost loans were available allowing CAUD to build at a time when a lull in the construction industry created a buyer's market for construction.

Bennett & Devore pledge $100 to Camp Boyle marker

Campaign now stands at $125. But, Historical Marker goal of $2,500 still is $2,375 short, and we only have six weeks to beat the the B-58 Hustler record.

Chris Bennett writes:
Ed, I think I have a big mouth! I think we will probably need to talk to the ladies at the Adair County Public library/ Columbia Historical Society about handling the money for us. You want to talk to them for our group? I volunteer Professor A. W. Reed to make a radio spot for our local radio stations. He is always thrilled when I volunteer him for free work!

We raised the Mckinney money in about 6 weeks. Bennett & DeVore Electric will give $100 to the cause.

Have a good day! - Chris Bennett
Thanks. Chris Bennett, or whoever is in charge of the money, now $125, accepts your generous donation on behalf of Bennett & Devore. As the Man of the House, ergo the boss, I'll accept the charge of talking to the Library if it's okay with Linda. Most appreciated, of course, are the free gratis for nothing pro bono services of Prof. A. W. Reed for the radio spots. You won't have to ask us once. The services are accepted! And as for the Big Issue: We can't be writing letters all day. We've got to beat that World Record Book of Guinnesses six week campaign at McKinney, KY. -CM

Mike Watson first to pledge to Camp Boyle marker

First an historical marker; later, 13 Kentucky Cavalry Park
'Currently a Kentucky Historical marker costs $2,500.00 The money has to come from private donations, the government will not pay for such a marker. If we could get 100 business and individual to donate $25 to the cause it would be rather easy. I think it would be fitting to put information about the 13th Kentucky on one side, and Information about Camp Boyle on the other. That would be a good start until a rich benefactor can be found to buy up some of the dilapidated buildings on the square, and tear them down to build the 13th Kentucky Cavalry Park, complete with a bronze statue of a Kentucky Cavalry man, on a fine stallion. - Chris Bennett

Mike Watson writes:
Chris Bennett is absolutely correct in what he has related. Perhaps the erection of the monument can coincide with the release of the book on the 13th Kentucky Cavalry, which has more information on the men who served in it than regimental history--and Chris explained why, there are few primary sources available...but many, many stories of brave men and women who fared as best they could during the War.

Start up the fund and I'll one of the 100.

Importance of Battle of Mill Springs, Adair's strategic location

More on Camp Boyle and Adair Co., KY's role in a pivotal point in 1862 in the Civil War, which dramatically altered the course of history -
'The weakest points in the Confederate lines were at two points: At Forts Henry and Donelson on the lower Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, and at the break in the Confederate line between Bowling Green and Somerset. At Adair County, in other words. - DEREK COOMER

By Derek Coomer

The Mill Springs battlefield is located on Hwy 80 between Russell Springs and Somerset, just east of Nancy. There is a museum, visitor's center, and military cemetery at the site, and over 600 acres of the battlefield have been preserved. I'd forgotten to mention that 150th anniversary of the battle is being celebrated this weekend with reenactments both today and tomorrow (January 21 and 22).

Keep It Simple

2012! I am still trying to find out what happened to 2011. It vanished right before my eyes. My grandchildren grew taller, I shrank about a half an inch, added a few more wrinkles to the face and a few more pounds to the waist, but otherwise, I am unchanged. The same old me.

Blue and gold Macaw with big cage for sale

We're hoping to post a photo of this interesting Adair Countian, and will do so if and when a good one becomes available. This story, by one of our favorite writers, isn't in the CM classifieds yet, but it's too good to wait. If we need to, we'll post the notice of the Macaw in CM classifieds later.

By Savannah Burton

i have a blue and gold macaw for sale, i was told that she is female but i do not have the blood test to prove it, she is about 3 or 4 years old. I'm not sure, but her birthday is in late July.

She is very talkative when she wants to be and loves to call for the dogs to "GET IN HERE." she loves to give kisses and whenever the phone rings she says hello until someone answers it.She loves to jabber when you leave the room or are not paying attention to her. She is very smart and knows how to open her cage door. so i had to rig it so she cant open it, but i still can easily.

Her cage is a good 6-6 1/2 tall and has wheels on it, it is in very good condition. It also comes the food we have for her and her cage accessories. I hate selling her but i just dont have enough time for her and she needs a good home. I will only sell her to a good home! That way i know she will get the life she deserves.

Make an offer for her, the cage and everything else.
