Jesus turns tables, asks What are YOU going to do?

In a prayerful WWJD (What would Jesus do) moment, whining about the country's debt crisis, the message was clear -- from the Whitehouse to my own house -- no more excuses, no more finger pointing, no more buck passing -- and vote to put Congress on commission pay basis with no benefits, no guarantees.

By Linda Waggener

In my spiritual work this Sunday morning, I tried to remember to come into the house of the Lord with thanksgiving. There's so very much to be grateful for, especially the incredible grandchildren I've spent the last week becoming even more enchanted by. After giving thanks for blessings of life, family and community, I found myself whining the popular WWJD question about the country's economic crisis.

Personal observations of Billy Joe Fudge: Centrist Extremism

By Billy Joe Fudge
Personal commentary

In light of all the current goings-on in Washington and other governmental municipalities around our great nation, I have a few "foods for thought" to interject. We are all familiar with and are bombarded daily with talking points labeling folks on both the Right and the Left as extremists. There is definitely a contingent of Liberals and Conservatives that are solid on their positions and refuse to be swayed into compromising on their firmly held beliefs.

Poetry by Robert Stone: No final words, a sonnet

No final words
- a sonnet for the breaking heart
What came before, what after will appear,
these two great questions drive the questing mind
unsatisfied with any season here,
imagining some other bliss to find.

What was the bad. what good can future bring,
these two concerns distract the caring soul,
discouraged by sad thoughts that ever cling,
conceiving better times with strict control.

What cost unfruitful past, what still may be,
these two unknowns must haunt the failing flesh,
unwilling to acknowledge dull debris,
believing hope can yet arise afresh.

The wise with fortune do most gently strive.
No final words can keep a heart alive.

- Robert Stone, 31 July 2011

105 Years Ago: All the important news from August 1, 1906

Wicked Columbia merchant had word for those who might reach Hell ahead of him, and divers other stories, below, in a most interesting newspaper on a week when even the big story merited only a sentence

By "Jim"

Actual news content on the front page of the August 1st, 1906 News was thinner than March ice, the highlight being a one-sentence entry that didn't even warrant its own headline:

The bridge over Russell creek on the Stanford road has been given a fresh coat of paint, changing its color from black to red.

Carol Perkins: Back to school

Back in her Metcalfe County school days, a trip to Bowling Green was like going to Nashville. All her school clothes came from Folks or Bernard's, but many friends got clothes by mail order from Penney's or Sears. New clothes were the best part of going back to school. Having to listen and behave - another matter!

Back to school

Back to school is such a grand time for little kids and even some grown ones whose summers have been spent working hard and playing little. "I miss my friends" is a common phrase from a student who doesn't drive and lives far from the lights of a city.

Bagworms can cover and quickly kill evergreen shrubs

About: Stumped by strange looking insect

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Dear Ed, Tell Sharon that she definitely does not want to let this bagworm live in her herb garden or anywhere else. These creatures especially like evergreen bushes and will soon cover them and kill them. As I remember, the only solution was to pull them off by hand as soon as possible and to burn them. I don't recall exactly why we thought we needed to burn them but I think it had something to do with their ability to escape what you collected them in and get back to the bushes. -Robert Stone

A Kindred Spirit: Are you stubborn as a mule?

By Teresa Kindred

If you are a grandparent being stubborn about something may not be a good idea, and then again it might. Let me explain.

First, let me state that I think mules have gotten a bad reputation. I mean they have other qualities besides being stubborn. So how come no one ever mentions them? I think mule loving folks should get together and file a lawsuit against whoever has stereotyped the poor mule.

Chuck Hinman : 031 : Teach Me To Pray, Lord

It's Just Me Again by Chuck Hinman. No. 031. Teach Me to Pray, Lord
Is Chuck Hinman your favorite Sunday with CM columnist, as many tell us? If so, we hope you'll drop him a line by email. Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net

The next earlier Chuck Hinman column: Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 352, The planter that Chuck built

By Chuck Hinman

A well known church hymn goes "Teach me to pray, Lord, teach me to pray. Thou art the potter, I am the clay, etc." I can't remember all the words, but the lyrics leave the impression that talking to the Lord through prayer is a learned experience. And, of course it is enhanced through repetition.

My observation of Connie's sister was that with her prayer beads, she repeated prayers while holding each bead of her rosary. While that seemed to the uninformed to be a questionable practice, who am I to interfere in anyone's conversation with God.

Today, SUNDAY with CM. July 31, 2011

Here are Quick Links to selected favorite SUNDAY with CM columns, stories with perhaps some links to albums, and to news from the past week and beyond. SUNDAY with CM - JULY 31, 2011 for July 31, 2011 and your favorite writers + important news stories:
A Time to Praise Great Adair Countians.
More will be added today, we hope, with the help of readers. Along with it, we hope suggestions for what would be proper and fitting honors for the living, memorials for the dead, should be be considered by the community:
  • Charles Victor Sparks: The community continues to grieve. No one speaks of his him with another who knew him without a choke, without misty eyes, and always, an story about how he personally touched so many lives, in both big and little ways. Thoughts are now turning to fitting memorials and tributes.

  • Dakota Meyer:: What tributes Adair and Green Counties have to tell the country how proud we are of Congressional Medal of Honor Dakota Meyer, whose name is already a household word in America? An who was claimed for a short time, by Austin, Texas (but the Austin American has updtated their story in the last day: See http://www.statesman.com/news/local/future-medal-of-honor-recipient-now-lives-in-1633907.html)? A street? A school? A locally made movie?

  • BG James A. Williamson:And as we do, would it be a good time for Adair County to make a permanent monument to her first Congressional of Honor winner, BG James A Williamson: Son of Adair, Medal of Honor receipient? After all, it is significant that there are two Congressional Medal of Honor winners from one small town.

  • Col. Frank Wolford: Does yet more need to be done to pay tribute to him? An article article in Sunday with CM, by Jim about another facet of Frank Lane Wolford's career - as a statesman - brings to memory another quote by Adair County's Judge H.C. Baker from an earlier contribution by Cyrus:
Judge H.C. Baker wrote this about Colonel Frank Wolford, after Wolford's death in 1895:
He did not aspire to be any other body than Frank Wolford, and hence he had no model after which to pattern. Frank Wolford was sui generis, a diamond in the rough, and just a little different from all other diamonds.

Poetry by Billy Joe Fudge: With You

WITH YOU
By Billy Joe Fudge
I am a castle, admire me.
Stare in awe at my majesty.
Each stone and timber I lay in
To make myself strong among men.

I stand tall and do no cower
For above most I do tower.
Constructed solid and so strong;
Within myself I make my home.

From my youth I've been building me
Tall and mighty for all to see.
Ever bigger was my decree-
Stronger and stronger I would be.

From inside me I would expand.
Upon my own strength I did stand!
These were the things I did believe.
This was the way I did perceive

Myself up until the present.
I was continually crescent.
The island that none be, I thought-
I was, but thinking came to naught.

Yes, my scient went overcast
And I suffered a colder blast
Of frigid arctic through my walls
Than I thought possible at all.

Castle stones began to crumble
As termites began to mumble
About chewing up my timbers
And starting to dismember

My supposed self-sufficient home.
Now, isolated and alone,
Thinking of my castle's collapse
And how to build a stronger house;

At long last I began to see-
My castle should be less of me.
Now I'm proud to say that I choose-
To build my home with, with you.
