Mary Keltner: Birds of KY, an educational device for Grandmothering

Mary Keltner writes:
Ed, Just wanted you to know that the website, and especially the photo archive, has been a great teaching tool for Molly. She loves "birdies", and frequently asks me to "look up the birdies" on the computer. Then when we go for walks it is fun to see what types of birds we spot. There is a lot of forested area near the house, so we see many types of birds and also deer throughout the neighborhood. -Mary
Thanks for your letter. It makes this day for us. Thanks for the comment on the website; it's a reminder of how much this community must appreciate the way dozens, maybe hundreds now, of highly skilled photographers have shared some great photos here. Thanks for the reminder of the the joys of walking through the woodlands with a two year old. Precious moments only grandparents can fully appeciate. -EW

Very special day in Birthdays: A delightful, intentional coincidence

Today is L.G. "Peanut" McKinley's 83rd birthday.

That's special, but the occasion is even more special for this World War II, South Pacific Theater Naval Veteran. It is also his 60th anniversary.

On April 14, 1951, he and bride Helen Fay Waggener exchanged wedding vows - vows which have endured 60 years now - at the close of a revival service at the Columbia Baptist Church. The church was packed in those days, when it was obligatory for everyone from every church to attend every other church's revivals.

Ms. Alta: We have lost a great treasure to the ages

Mike Watson writes:
Alex Haley revived an ages-old saying, "Every time an old person dies, a library burns down."

This is all too true with the passing of "Ms. Alta." She was always most willing to aid me on questions about local history.

Her knowledge was vast. We have all lost a great treasure to the ages. - MW
