Fire destroys landmark residence at Garlin, KY

2011-06-30 - Garlin, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
All that was left of the old Demaree and Mary Richards House at Garlin, KY, after a fire this morning, June 30, 2011, were two chimney's and smouldering ruins. Mr. Richards was a building contractor; his wife, Mary Stevenson Richards, was a highly respected Adair County teacher. The loss of the house was far overshadowed by concerns for a beloved fireman who suffered a heart attack while fighting the blaze and was taken to Westlake Regional Hospital before transfer to a tertiary center. The house was the boyhood home of former Western head basketball coach Jim Richards and Jody Richards, the longest serving Speaker of the House in Kentucky history.
