Academic Co. Yes: Coaches recognized with new salary schedule

2010-10-22 - Photo by Ed Waggener. 1204 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY
Getting Priorities in Order: Emphasis on brains, scholarship The Adair County School Board unanimously approved a new salary schedule for the 2010-2011 school year which represents a major move to recognize academics as much as athletics in the school system. The salary schedule above more than doubles the pay of academic coaches' stipends and raises the number of positions from 4 to 7. Board members Mike Harris and Marsha Walker, who created the schedule, said that the pay is simply a move to catch up the woefully underpaid academic coaches. Ironically, the Academic teams, along with the Adair County High School Marching Band and Adair County FFA, are the highest achieving extracurricular activities in the school district. Mr. Harris noted that even with the catch-up pay, the entire academic coach cost is less than that of a single Level I sports program (Boys basketball. Girls basketball. Football. See Athletic Salary schedule). Harris (5) moved the adoption of the schedule, and Walker (2) seconded the motion, with all five members, Chairman Floyd Burton (4), Chris Watts (3) and Greg Willis (1) voting for the adoption. The action was taken at the board's Thursday, October 21, 2010, regular meeting.
