First to attend Cane Valley Elementary School
 2024-07-02 - Taylor County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. The Rev. Michael Caldwell was the first African-American student to attend Cane Valley Elementary School in Adair County in the year 1956. Michael was six years old. His sister, Rose, would follow him the next year as the first female African-American to enter the school. Their story is told in the accompanying article by Dr. David Whitlock, a retired Baptist minister, author and educator.
