Epicurean Kentuckian: Pawpaw harvest
2025-09-08 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen. A small harvest of pawpaws, gifted from a friend. These "Kentucky Bananas" seem a little smaller than the ones that I remember growing behind Audrey Waggener's house atop Jamestown Hill in the late 1970s, but it's possible that those trees, like her abundant tomato plants, just understood what was expected of them and produced accordingly.
Kentucky State University (KSU) has the only full-time pawpaw research program in the world; it was started in 1990 with the aim of developing pawpaw as a new tree-fruit crop for Kentucky. Pawpaw is the largest edible native fruit in North America and has very few diseases compared to other orchard crops. (Wikipedia).

2025-09-08 - Fairplay, KY - Photo by Veronica Arnold. Veronica writes, "What a full moon we had last night, must have been full lumen! I snapped these pictures with my cell phone, as the moon rose, then when it was fully up. It was so bright, while only the close up shows detail, the regular picture shows how much light it was throwing!"

Chickweed Geometer Moth
2025-09-08 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen. The "geometer" in the name, according to North American Insects and Spiders, comes from the "means of locomotion of the larvae or caterpillars, which lack most of the prolegs of other Lepidopteran caterpillars. Equipped with appendages at both ends of the body, a caterpillar will clasp with its front legs and draw up the hind end, then clasp with the hind end (prolegs) and reach out for a new front attachment, creating a loop, and creating the impression that it is measuring its journey. The caterpillars are accordingly called loopers, spanworms, or inchworms."

September Full Moon
2025-09-08 - Russell County, KY - Photo by Roldcat. Although we didn't get to experience the blood moon of the lunar eclipse on this side of the globe tonight, the Columbia, Russell Springs and Jamestown area got a good glimpse of the full moon illuminating the few clouds that were in its path.
