Whitehurst Diaries: no fall garden this year

Sharon writes, "We have no fall garden this year. The relentless heat of late July and August didn't inspire the seeds of beets and green beans to germinate. Jim has run over much of the garden area with the tractor and bush hog.
We grew up calling these flowers New England Asters. They were roadside/pasture flowers of early autumn. I ordered seed several years ago for a variety of 'wild' asters and was delighted to find that I have four distinct colors, the traditional deep purple, lavender and two shades of pink. Of course I lost the tags and no idea of the correct name for each, so I refer to them by the English gardening term, Michaelmas Daisies.
