The price has been reduced on the 213-year-old John Field House, 111 Reed Street, Columbia, KY. Call Tom Waggener for details at 270-529-1317. Estimates are coming in for needed brick repairs. It is pictured at right as the house is today and at left is a photo of the house in hand hooked rug art created from scratch by former resident John Hunter Walker of Frankfort.
The father of Mark Twain, John Marshall Clements, rented a room in the upstairs of this house as a young attorney. He married Columbian Jane Lampton and they lived in the house while he practiced law. She visited Columbia many times after they moved, but there's no record of their son, Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain), coming with her. However, this doesn't discourage those of us who enjoy the lore that Mark Twain could have been conceived in this very house. Genealogist Mike Watson is authoring a book on history of the house.
