Travel: What happened to all the balconies?

On a visit to slightly-Eastern Kentucky this weekend, we took Lexington Avenue toward Main Street in downtown Winchester. Friends had recommended we visit Loma's at the Opera House for lunch (an excellent recommendation, it turns out), and on the way, this scene caught my eye, in large part because of the building-width exterior balcony.
Balconies were once a common and charming use of exterior space, not just a prop for Shakespearian actors. Does anyone know why so few remain? Comments | Permalink
