Birds of Kentucky: Cooper's Hawk

I saw this hawk flash in front of my car to land on something in a nearby yard. I stopped the car to grab a photo. I'm not sure if he was protecting the catch from me or from another hawk overhead, but the wing spread to pretect what they've caught is called "mantling".
Columbia Magazine's Senior Consulting Buteologist, who assisted with the ID, says this could be a juvenile, based on the eye color. (He also says Cooper's Hawks are accipiters, not buteos.) Comments | Permalink
