Darlene Franklin Campbell grew up in wooded areas of Southern Adair County, Kentucky, living in the Gradyville, Flatwoods and Milltown communities.
She graduated from Sparksville Grade Center and Adair County High School then received an Art Scholarship to Lindsey Wilson College where she earned her B.A. and M.A. in education. Her writing and art have appeared in multiple publications, both online and traditional. She has attended the Appalachian Writers Conference, WisCon and the Arrowmont School of Arts.
In 2010, she won the Reader's Choice Award in young adult fiction from the Predators and Editors organization. In 2012, she won the Mary Ballard Poetry award for her work, Uncommon Clay. She has received multiple awards for her art and writing. Proceeds from the sales of her work have gone to fight mountaintop removal and to assist in finding cures for cancer.
