Traditional New Years day meal for good luck

2024-01-01 - Harrodsburg, KY - Photo by Renea Watwon
Traditional meal for the New Year reaches back hundreds of years, but many do not practice the old ways in this new day. We do continue the traditions of our ancestors, but with a few modifications.

Our family brought in each January 1st with black eye peas, cabbage, fried jowl meat, and cornbread. That has not changed in 2024. There are a few slight changes: jowl bacon is served alongside country ham, the cabbage isn't fried but fried with onion and red pepper flakes in bacon drippings.

Ed always reminded me to take the photo first. I usually forget. But Mrs. Watson preserved this image before the noon-time meal. Leftovers in a few hours.
Happy 2024 to you all!!
