Gavin Giles, a 5th grade student at ACES, wrote the county-winning essay in the AARP sponsored, "Grandparent of the Year" essay contest. Gavin wrote the essay about his grandmother, Cheryl Giles. Gavin is the son of Ashley McGuffin.

Warning off an unwanted visitor

This trio captured the heart of Columbia Magazine reader Connie Slattery who mentioned she's had enough experience in photography to know how hard it could have been to capture them in action. The wind was at their backs ruffling feathers when they spotted the intruder. I was cowardly hiding in the car with the window down only enough to focus, and be ready to hit the gas if they got too close.
I've been fascinated by them since I was marked by one of their ancestors as a child visiting my best friend Faye in Knob Lick. Faye's grandmother Lucy Lambirth had geese like these, honking warriors, aggressively flying at and snapping any small humans moving around their yard.
