Kentucky Color: It's True

2023-07-15 - Great Wooded South - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge
Billy Joe writes, "Yes, it is true! Moss really prefers to grow on the North side of a tree! At least it does here in the Northern hemisphere. As you can see on my Sugar maple tree, moss will grow on the South side (at right) also but upon close examination of the entire circumference of the tree, one will find that moss loves the more moist, shady and cooler, mini-ecosystem on the North side (left) even better.

This tree has a couple of booboos caused by the roofers but a healthy and vibrant, well maintained tree will not be negatively affected by minor scrapes."
