2023-11-13 -- Columbia treasure, the 200+ year old John Field House, is featured in the winter issue of This Old House magazine, delivered in the mail today. The property for sale at 111 East Fortune Street offers residential, commercial, and home business opportunities. The article under the heading "Save This Old House" says, "Its grandeur and rich history make it deserving of a vibrant future that honors its past." Much of the research comes from Columbia Magazine archives and historian Mike Watson. Photos are by Linda Waggener.

Discoverer and witnesses to giant mushroom

Earl Coffey was tending to chores on his tractor when he spotted what looked to possibly be a dead animal in the grassy edge of Coffeygrounds Farm woods that lead down to Cabin Fork Creek. He would discover not a dead animal, but a record size mushroom the likes of which no one in the neighborhood has ever seen. Measurements were documented by his brother Joe in case it needs to be nominated for a prize at the fair. Giant mushroom discovery revisited

Earl Coffey placed his hand on the giant mushroom he discovered on the family farm to help demonstrate its extraordinary size. After 24 hours away from its roots the mushroom was turning dark in color as mushrooms do, and becoming quite odiferous. Neighbor Gary Darling said he'd once tried to eat a bit of this type wild white mushroom and it had been followed by worrisome stomach troubles so he recommended observation only. Joe Coffey took exacting tools and documented the mushroom's measurements for the record - it's 62 inches around/circumference, 7.5 inches tall and 16.5 inches across/width. Comments | Permalink
