Travel: The Wood Tower

2024-12-03 - Mainz, Germany - Photo by Veronica Arnold
While traveling in Germany, the Arnold family took a day trip to the city of Mainz, the capital and largest city of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Veronica says, "We saw the Holzturm, near the banks of Rhine. The weather was gross, cold, foggy. So we couldn't see the river clearly. But was hard to miss this medieval tower. "

Wikipedia says, "The Wood Tower (German: Holzturm) is a mediaeval tower in Mainz, Germany, with the Iron Tower and the Alexander Tower one of three remaining towers from the city walls. Its current Gothic appearance dates to the early 15th century. It is so named because wood used to be piled next to it on the bank of the Rhine"

Veronica writes, "Mainz Cathedral is catholic cathedral which has undergone many renovations showing Romanesque (original), Gothic (chapels and bell towers), and Baroque (roof) architecture. Of course over time, wars and fires have damaged this church, but the church keeps fixing and trying to restore that which was destroyed."
