America's 'unofficial largest' Osage Orange Tree welcomes visitors at Old Fort Harrod State Park. The Osage Orange Tree (Maclura pomifera) is most commonly called the Hedge Apple Tree with fruit that makes great throwing balls. The sign at its base reads, "Circa late 18th Century, Tree crown is 76', Tree height is 88', Circumference of tree standing 12' 4", Diameter at breast height 56". The Harrodsburg tree is taller and broader than the National Champion, but remains the Unofficial National Champion due to the split trunk."
