A sunset for Abba

2026-01-28 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Ellen Zornes
Little Abba loves the pink color of the clouds in this sunset. Her devoted GiGi sent her this picture from Columbia until road conditions improve and she can get to Lexington for a visit. The fallen limbs in the foreground await ice and snow melt and someone with a chain saw.

Western Fire Detail waiting for a flight

Hurry up and wait is part of the process on Western Fire Detail. I don't remember the names of all the folk for they were from all over Kentucky. However, I have to give a shout out to the two standing in front with me.

In the middle was Robbie Sowash. I only met him on this trip but he was quite a personality. He was the McCracken County Ranger. When asked about his county, his automatic reply was, "McCracken has the meanest dogs in Kentucky"! He could also purse his lips into a pucker that produced a siren sound of mythical proportions. More about his whistle in a later chapter.

Standing by Robbie was Bobby Gaines. Bobby was the Grant County Ranger, I believe. A really fine man, a gentleman who was very conscientious about his vocation. Proud to call him friend!

Walking out to the plane

Taking the long walk to our flight. The yellow shirts and green pants are made of fire retardant materials. Fire retardant doesn't mean it won't burn. It does mean it has a high heat ignition point and will self extinguish when heat is removed.
