Travel: The Shrewsbury-Windle House

2025-11-07 - Madison, IN - Photo by Pen
The Shrewsbury-Windle House, located at 301 W 1st St, in downtown Madison, IN. Historic Madison, Inc. says, "Called the "best of the best" of America's Greek Revival buildings, the Shrewsbury-Windle House features a soaring 3-story spiral staircase, 16-foot ceilings, intricate plaster moldings, and ornately carved stone details. Completed in 1849 by architect Francis Costigan, the 13-room mansion features perhaps the most original pre-Civil War Drawing Rooms in the US. The Shrewsbury, Walker, and Windle families lived here for 160 years."

Carol Perkins in her award-winning hat

Carol Perkins poses above in her award-winning hat and grey wig, as declared by the owner of The Rex Family Restaurant in Nancy, KY, on a recent Halloween lunch.

Carol says that getting the fifteen women in attendance organized for a group picture required her inner child to leave and the teacher to come out when no one was listening to anyone else. Getting permission from a group of fifteen women to share the resulting photo of all their hats proved too much even for the veteran educator and Champion Milliner.
