AmeriCorps FRYSC literacy tutor Ashleigh Lewis recently received an award for her service to students. Lewis, who was a tutor at Campbellsville Middle School last school year, received the FRYSC Corps Exemplary Service Award.

The award was presented at the Victory Over Violence annual Family Resource and Youth Services Center Conference in Louisville on July 18.

Heather Musinski, FRYSC Corps program director, and Carie Kizziar, FRYSC Corps member coordinator, presented the award.

Sue Crabtree, FRYSC director, nominated Lewis for the award.

In her nomination, Crabtree wrote that all but one of Lewis's students increased their MAP scores.

Crabtree wrote that Lewis is active in her home community and in the Campbellsville Independent Schools service area.

"In order to better serve hungry families in her home community of Greensburg," Crabtree wrote, "Ashleigh has taken leadership of the team that provides daily replenishment of the Blessing Box. The Blessing Box was created to address the emergency food needs of area families that were not being served through existing programs. It allows hungry families to pick up emergency food at any hour of the day or night, and in a confidential manner."

Lewis checks and stocks the box daily, Crabtree wrote, and has recruited others to help.

"In addition to food items, Ashleigh also accepts and distributes toiletries, diapers, toilet paper, coupons and other household items as available," Crabtree wrote.

"The Blessing Box is now used every day, providing a direct service to families in the area."

Crabtree wrote that Lewis also makes and donates fleece blankets for local nursing home patients.

"There are many long-term residents who do not have local family members to visit, and these blankets are greatly appreciated and help residents feel connected to the community."

Lewis also gathered items to make hygiene kits for the Green River Ministries homeless shelter to distribute to clients.

She also worked with the Campbellsville High School FCCLA group to raise money for the homeless shelter and the Taylor County Animal Shelter.

"Ashleigh's leadership has impacted her students and school, and also seniors, hungry and homeless families and abused and neglected animals," Crabtree wrote.

"Ashleigh is also a full-time college student, taking online classes, and is active in her church. She is an excellent role model for her students, and a valuable member of our community, and deserving of this award for exemplary service."
