It is the small business' civic engagement efforts that earned it the Corporations for the Commonwealth Award from Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes on Thursday. "The backbone of our Commonwealth is strengthened by people and organizations supporting and lifting up their communities," said Grimes. "Paula's Hot Biscuit sets the example. Here in Hodgenville they go out of their way to help families through the trials and tribulations of a medical hardship like cancer and assist students in bake sale fundraisers for a local shelter." Paula Varney, owner of the 20-year-old small business located in downtown Hodgenville, started the restaurant after working in her father's Abe's Market. Corporations for the Commonwealth recognizes nominated Kentucky businesses that demonstrate a commitment to corporate giving, a drive to improve local and/or regional social conditions, and a culture of giving within their organizations. In 2017, Grimes recognized DV8 Kitchen, a Lexington restaurant giving jobs to people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, and Farmer's Daughter Soap Company in Paducah for its support of charities throughout the Purchase Area and UGN, Inc., in Somerset for its involvement in the local school system and mentoring program.
