Anthony (Pops) York, 97, Casey County, KY (1920-2018)


Throughout his lifetime, Mr. York worked at a service station, feed store, car lot, farmed, and operated a grocery store and gas station. He also worked at King's Department Store and managed Baldwin's Men's Store and Casey Dry Goods, which later became the Dollar General, which was the second Dollar General store in the chain. For his 90th birthday, Mr. York was gifted a self-propelled push mower, and could frequently be seen mowing his, as well his family's yards, as well as the grounds at Brush Creek Cemetery. In 2013, he was presented with a well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award. He was a native of Casey County, KY and a resident of the county at the time of his death. He was the son of the late Ethel Monroe York & Effie Austin York and the widower of Vodella Thomas York. He leaves 20 direct living descendants, spanning four generations.

Anthony "Pops" York, age 97, passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2018, surrounded by his loving family at the Casey County Hospital in Liberty, KY.

The funeral service will be held at 12pmNoonCT/1pmET, on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at First Baptist Church of Liberty with Bro. Brad King, Bro. Jimmy Brown and Bro. Joe Hatchett officiating. Burial will follow in Wilkerson Cemetery. The family of Mr. York will receive friends 5pm-7pmCT/6pm-8pmET, on Monday, June 25, 2018 and from 7pm-12pmNoonCT/8am-1pmET, on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at First Baptist Church, 300 Hustonville Street, Liberty, KY.



Pallbearers will be Andy Jackson, Ryan Jackson, Brian King, Barry King, Josh Burchett, Micah Meece, Dave Kimbler and Adam King.

Anthony (Pops) York, Casey County, KY (1920-2018)

Born on August 20, 1920, in Casey County, KY, he was a son of the late Ethel Monroe York & Effie Austin York. He died Saturday, June 23, 2018, in Liberty, Casey County, KY, at the age of 97 years, 10 months, and three days.

Mr. York was a devoted and faithful member, usher, and a member of the building and grounds committee at First Baptist Church of Liberty since 1953. He could be seen handing out church programs every Sunday morning at First Baptist.

  • His son: Tony (Katie) York of Liberty, KY

  • His daughter: Clydia (David) King of Liberty, KY

  • Seven grandchildren: Brad (Nicky) King, Brian (Angela) King, Barry (Amy) King, Andy Jackson, Ryan (Emma) Jackson, Emilee (David) York Kimbler and Ashley (Josh) York Burchett

  • Ten great-grandchildren: Leann, Jenna, Adam, Jackson, Ava, Asher, Archer, Mason, Kinslee and Avery

  • A great-great grandchild: Bailey

  • Two sisters: Lula Bell (Bob) Lawson of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Charlotte (John Livingston) Amburgy of Murfreesboro, TN

  • Two brothers: Frankie (Dorcas) York of Cincinnati, Ohio and Michael (Karen) York of Arizona
In addition to his parents, Mr. York is preceded in death by his loving wife, Vodella Thomas York, who passed away on May 23, 2007; a sister, Uva Dell Hoskins; and a brother, Archie York.
