Chairmen Wise, Carney announce school safety working group

Ex-officio members, consultants named.

FRANKFORT, KY (8 Jun 2018) - Senator Max Wise (R-Campbellsville) and Representative Bam Carney (R-Campbellsville) announced Friday the six ex-officio members selected to serve on the School Safety Working Group which will meet frequently throughout the interim period. The six ex-officio members are as follows:


  • Dr. Joe Bargione, retired school psychologist, Jefferson County Public Schools

  • Jody Glass, a social studies teacher at Greenwood High School in Warren County

  • Keith Griesser, a Principal at Paris Elementary School in Bourbon County

  • Nasim Mohammadzadeh, a rising junior at Dunbar High School in Fayette County

  • Alex Payne, Commissioner, Department of Criminal Justice Training in Madison County

  • Dr. Henry Webb, Superintendent, Kenton County Schools
The two co-chairmen also announced a pair of non-paid co-consultants that also will participate and contribute in the activities of the School Safety Working Group. The two co-consultants are as follows:
  • John Akers, Executive Director, Kentucky Center for School Safety in Madison County

  • Major General Jerry Humble, of Russellville, a retired Two-Star U.S. Marine Corps General and former Executive Director of the Tennessee Office of Homeland Security
"After taking suggestions from all of our School Safety Work Group legislative members, we are confident that we have put together a diverse and distinguished group of individuals that will offer valued perspectives for promoting safety in our schools," Chairman Wise said. "I look forward to working collaboratively to tackle this complex issue at our meeting this Monday and throughout the interim period."

Both Senator Wise and Representative Carney also co-chair the Interim Joint Committee on Education, which will also be addressing the issue of school safety at its June 11 meeting, which will be held at 1pmCT, in Room 154 of the Capitol Annex, 702 Capital Avenue, Frankfort, KY

"The group that we have formed consists of highly experienced individuals with rich backgrounds in education and public safety," Rep. Carney said. "We are thankful to everyone who has shown interest in being a group member and I am eager to hear their invaluable viewpoints as we address the importance of safety in Kentucky schools."

Senate President Robert Stivers (R-Manchester) and House Speaker Pro Tempore David Osborne (R-Prospect) authorized the School Safety Working Group for the 2018 Legislative Interim, pending ratification at the next Legislative Research Commission meeting. The working group is authorized to meet once monthly upon agreement of the co-chairs through December 30, 2018. Staff of the Interim Joint Committee on Education shall provide support for the working group.
