The 2018 Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce Banquet drew a record crowd for the annual event. With guest speaker Hilda Legg (more on her dynamic, challenging speech in a separate story) and strong business leaders nominated for the awards, the Cranmer Dining Center at Lindsey Wilson College was at near capacity. The winners of the coveted Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce Awards were announced before the packed audience at Lindsey Wilson College's Roberta D. Cranmer Dining Center.

The winners in each of the following categories were:

The OUTSTANDING AWARD WINNERS for 2018

For list of nominations, see: 2018 Chamber Awards Ballot with List of All Nominees

Outstanding Business/Professional Man of the Year: RICHARD PHELPS, VP, Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, presented by Sue Stivers, who complimented his devotion to his community, the many activities he is involved in, including the Chamber of Commerce. She said that she had observed his service over the years to every detail, even to perfectionism.

Outstanding Business/Professional Woman of the Year: STACEY HATCHER WILSON, Community Medical Services, presented by Kaye Bowman, who said, "In 1999, my brother David and I sat down with Stacey to brainstorm about the company and started Community Medical. We were in the small location by Dairy Dip four years, before building across from the post office. Now the business has expanded to the old hospital site on Bomar Heights. Before I retired from our partnership, the joy of every day was knowing I'd see Stacey when I got to work."

Outstanding Health Advocate of the Year: ABE CROSS, director of the Lindsey Wilson College Health & Wellness Center. Presented by Chris Schmidt, Lindsey Wilson Dean of Students, who said, "Abe is perfect person for this health advocate award. One of his best decision after he moved here was to marry his Emily and they are now raising their twins in Adair County. When Abe moved to Berea for work he said he couldn't wait to come back to Adair County. When the director's position came open, he applied."

Outstanding Educator of the Year: SHEILA WILLIS, Adair County High School Science Teacher. Presented by Susan Peck, fellow science teacher, who said, "Sheila has been an important mentor to me from the beginning because of her knowledge of and passion about the subject of science. She and her husband run a dairy in Adair County, so if you are close to Sheila, as I am, you'll also get to learn a lot about milk production."

Outstanding Agriculturist of the Year: Day & Day Feed & Pet, presented to owners GARY & ANTHONY DAY by Stephen Keen, who said, "When you mix three generations that span the decades you get a successful business. This was started in 1954 by Garland Day, and coming forward to today, this is a full service farm and feed supply business. In 2003 they moved into a spacious new building on KY 55 north, and have created an award winning business."

Outstanding Volunteer of the Year: PEGGY LAWSON of Relay for Life. Presented by Steven Baker, who said, "You don't mention Relay for Life in Adair County, without hearing Peggy Lawson's name. She has taken on the responsibility for leadership every single year that no one was available. This year alone, she has collected $18,000 for Relay for Life. All of the nominees listed, including my beautiful wife, need our applause. However, in the case of Peggy, she has given the greatest sacrifice of herself. She's a mentor and a good friend - very deserving of this award."

Outstanding Employee of the Year: TAMMY SEXTON TARTER, WHVE FM 92.7 presented by Mike Harris, who said, "Tammy is very deserving of this title. A great employee, great wife and mother, and survivor. She works two of our stations. She's morning girl at 92.7, and then the mid-day dj at the Big Dawg in Campbellsville. She started with Shoreline as an intern at Lindsey Wilson, and has been with us ever since. We are very proud of her.

Outstanding Business/Industry of the Year: BROWN & BROWN of KENTUCKY, presented to Mike Neal, Georgina Roy & staff members. Presented by Adair County Judge Executive Michael Lee Stephens, who said, "I am proud to introduce this strong contributor to Adair County's economic base. Mike Neal is a longtime friend and member of the business community who opened Brown & Brown service center as vice president. Under his leadership, the center has received recognition on a national level. They have grown to 97 employees. Revenues have increased from $2 million in 2008 to $22.7 million in 2018 - and they continue to grow."
