Tree totally entraps implement at Green River Lake State Park

Curious things found on a Nature Hike at GRL State Park with Wayne Baxter - Album
Click on headline for story with photo(s)

By Wayne Baxter

On a short hike in Green River Lake State Park, I spotted a section of an old drag harrow a farmer had leaned up against a tree a half century ago before he moved off the land.

Closer inspection showed that the tree has grown completely around and captured the machine.

I saw a sudden flash of red about a hundred feet away. I zoomed in on it and snapped one frame and it was gone.

I thought I had a good cardinal picture until I saw the small tree branch an just the wrong place.

A real photographer would have deleted it, but what the heck? - Wayne

(Despite the author's protest about the branch, this will be, for many of us, an all-time favorite Cardinal photo. - ED WAGGENER)

Close up of trunk of tree which ensnared farm implement

Quite a feat of nature. Interesting designs are left in trees , this phenomenon took place, Wayne Baxter guesses, over a period of over half a century. Around the time of the construction of Green River State Park, but probably a lot earlier. Interesting, too, to see the bark complete seal around the harrow bar. - ED WAGGENER
