LWC softball splits doubleheader with Midway Wed 4 Apr 2018

COLUMBIA, KY - (Wed 4 Apr 2018) - The No. 11-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team split a doubleheader against Midway (KY) on Wednesday at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.

The Blue Raiders (25-6) dropped game one to the Eagles (9-12) 7-5. Lindsey Wilson picked up a 4-3 victory in eight innings in the second game on a Sydney Fourman walk off home run. With the home run, Fourman is tied with Kristina Krupinski for most home runs in a career with 40.




Game 1 : No. 11 Lindsey Wilson 5, Midway 7
Callum Pilgrim led off the bottom of the first with a single into left field. Pilgrim then advanced to second on a stolen base before Alaeni Ray hit her first home run of the season to give the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead. Midway cut the lead to 2-1 in the second inning on a Katelynn Mogelberg-Kauffman RBI-double.

Pilgrim led off the bottom of the third with a single to left field and advanced to second on a bobble by the Eagle leftfielder. After a groundout, Kalli Harris reached on an error by the Midway pitcher while Pilgrim advanced to third on the play. Sydney Fourman reached on an infield single to load the bases, Amber Hancock hit a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 3-1.

Dee Lewis singled to begin the top of the fourth inning. Aliyah Johnson cut the deficit to 3-2 with a double to deep center field. Lynsie Clark tied the game at 3-3 with a single that scored Johnson. Lindsey Wilson retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth at 4-3.

Back-to-back one-out singles by Benz and Gravens put runners on first and second in the top of the fifth. Benz then stole home tying the game back up at 4-4. Cassie Kooker doubled with two outs in the sixth inning. Kooker then came around to score on a Pilgrim single to give Lindsey Wilson a 5-4 lead.

The Eagles began the top of the seventh with a leadoff walk and a single. After a fielder's choice, Kelsey Gravens hit a three-run home run on an 0-2 count to put Midway in front 7-4. After a fly out to begin the bottom of the seventh, Fourman reached on an error by the Eagle first baseman. Alyssa Yates was able to get the next two outs to secure the 7-5 victory for Midway.

Annabelle Ramirez picked up the loss pitching all seven innings allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts. Pilgrim led the way with three hits while Ray drove in two runs.


Game 2: No. 11 Lindsey Wilson 4, Midway 3 (8 innings)

Marissa Walker began the game with a double to deep right-center field. Walker then came around to score on a Gravens single to give Midway a 1-0 lead. Pilgrim led off the bottom of the first with a single and then advanced to second on a stolen base. After a groundout moved her to third, Kalli Harris grounded out scoring Pilgrim tying the game at 1-1.

Kelsie Cornelius gave the Blue Raiders a 2-1 lead with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second. Carly Benz reached on a one-out infield single in the top of the third inning. Gravens hit a single to left-center field which advanced Benz to third. On the same play, Benz scored on an error by the shortstop to tie the game at 2-2.

Lindsey Wilson had runners on first and second with one out in the fifth inning but were unable to capitalize. After Pilgrim and Ray each got on base, the next two Blue Raider batters were retired ending the Lindsey Wilson threat. The Blue Raiders also stranded the winning-run in the seventh inning. Samantha Luckett led off the inning with a single. She then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a wild pitch. A lineout and a popout end the Lindsey Wilson scoring chance.

With the international tiebreaker in play, Midway took a 4-3 lead on a Gravens single to deep right-center field that scored Kendall Horn. Harris started at second in the bottom of the eighth with the international tiebreaker. She then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Fourman won the game for Lindsey Wilson with a two-run homerun on a 1-1 count.

Hannah Epperson pitched all eight innings allowing two earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. The run Midway scored in the eighth inning was charged as a team run as a result of the international tiebreaker rule. Fourman led the way with three hits and two RBIs while Pilgrim recorded two hits in the game.
