Nellie Garrett, 98, Adair County, KY (1918-2017)

She was the matriarch of a prominent, highly regarded Adair County, KY family. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Sam Loren & Gracie Smith Burton and the widow of Gilbert A. Garrett. She leaves 11 direct living descendants.

Nellie Garrett, 98, of Columbia, KY died Sunday, June 25, 2017 at 6:30pmCT, at her home.

Funeral service, Thursday, June 29, 2017 at 11amCT, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Steve Pescosolido officiating. Burial will follow the service in Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY. Visitation will be after 4pmCT, Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at the funeral home.

She was born July 22, 1918, in Adair County, KY. She was the daughter of the late Sam Loren & Gracie Smith Burton. She died Sunday, June 25, 2017, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 98 years, 11 months, and 27 days.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert A. Garrett on January 7, 1990; three brothers, Clyde, Willie and Clinton Burton, and two sisters, Beatrice Burton and Inez Roden.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include:>
  • One daughter & son-in-law: Joyce & Randall Pyles of Columbia, KY

  • Three grandchildren: Cindi (Dan) Waggener, Doug (Tammy) Pyles and Craig (Carla) Pyles

  • Seven great-grandchildren: Will and Michael Waggener; Jacob, Luke, Zachary, Holly & Emily Pyles

  • Sister-in-law: Virginia Burton of Columbia, KY

  • Special friends: Brenda Nokes & Teresa Dean

  • Several other relatives and friends
Expressions of sympathy are requested to be in the form of a donation to Trinity United Methodist Church or donation of Gideon Bibles. These may be left at the funeral home.
